12 THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, TUESDAY, JUNE 1, 1897 e ———r——— I e ————— L e ] OLYMPIANS WANT REE CONTESTS Pacific Athletic Association Members on the Club Standing. Pro‘essional EBoxing - Entertain- ments Do Not Meet With Approval. Fights Should Bs Held in the Club Where Mombers Are Not Charged Heavy Admissions. The officers of the Pacific Coast Ama- teur Athletic Association of the American Athletic Union are now sanguine that the Olympic Club will not succeed in- estab lishing on this coast an amateur asaocia- tion that will be recognized by the bona- | fide amateurs of this City and State. They say that at the first meeting called by Director Taylor of the Oiympic Club only a comparatively few clubs of the great number now enjoying bealthy life on this coast had representatives at the meeting. “The amateur club members who believe strictly in supportiug cleaa amateur sport | cannot afford to connect themselves with the scheme promulgated by some of the disgruntled members of the Olympic Club,” said Mr. Humphrey recently when addressing some of {he leading club mem- bers of this City and Oakland. “The Olympic Club permits its affairs to be hizndled by men who do not know any- thing comparatively about amateur ath- letic government, consequently nothing can be expected of it only what has ai- ready trauspired. *The condition of the clubnow is profs sional—thanks to the energetic services of | some of iis leadess who have routed the amateur athletes from the club vy acts that were not in accoraance with views of | gentlemen who huve no particular desire to associaie with professional pugs either 10 the ciub or in public. “The introduction of professional box- ing coniests has notassisted in any way to elevate the tone and good standing that the Olympic Club enjoyed for many years. * “Icontend that if the Olympic Club had foliowed out the old and good system of giving amateur fistic entertainments in its symnasiam occasionally for the pleasure of members tte membership would be jarge and affairs athletic would be in a beaithy and prosperous state to-day; but | time will prove that the club ‘made a | grave mistake when it switchea from s | purely amateur line to contend with pro- | jeszional boxing clubs for a share of the money that accrues ‘from professional pugilistic contests.” Auother prominent representative of the P. A A.ofthe A. A.U. who has veen a member of the Olympic Club for many years said tbat he felt sorry for the grand | old athletic institution, “The Q.ympic Club should stand on its | dignity,” said the athlete, “'and if it can- not exist by a clean system-of government then let it clo<e its duors rather than bring about an associstion of its members with the scum of the earth, “It is only & short time since that Eadie Kotb, the popular ‘athlete, was leader of the Olympic Club: He provided very ex- | cellent entertainments for the members in -the ¢ymnasium, which were always | largely attended. - The result was that un- der Kolb's administration - the club had | over 2200 paying members; but note the retrogression. 1 am s that ‘the mem- | bership has dwindlea down to 1300 paying members, and there certainly must bea cause for this rapid drop. *“There must be a screw loose some- where, and I contend that the disgruntiea feelings that have existed betwe-n the members of the club for some time were brongnt about when the club reteiled against amateur athletic entertainments | and flopped over to the professional side. I think thatif the members were asked to vote on tbe question, v.z.: whether it | would be to the better interestsof the-club | 1o hold its entertainments under its own roof where only the members could attend or to hold them in an_open hall where its | members must coime in contact with all classes, I predict thatthe vote would be stongly in favor of enlertainments being | held it the club building. *“As it now stands the members must pay the same prices of admission to out- side entertainments as are charged 1o Tom, Dickand Harry. The Olympic Club is professional and under no circnmstances would the Amateur :Athletic Union rein- state it if the clubappiied for admission.” NTAL LODGE NO. 144, . and A. tated meeting THLS (TUESDAY)E ING at 8 o'crock.
