12 THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, SATURDAY, MAY 22, 1897 NOW IT 1S WAR T0 THE KNIFE President Potter Scores the Seceding California Wheelmen. The Associated Cyclists Will Fight Back With a Ven- geance. A New Rozd Book to Be Issued in the Near Future—Gaining Members Daily. The latest action of Isaac B. Potter, president of the Leagus of American ‘Wheelmen, has made a war to the knife— a war of extermination—inevitable be- tween the California Associated Cyclists and the fazt dissolving North California Division, L. A. W. ‘When the first threats of secession were beard in this State it was not the object of the prime movers in the new organiza- tion to disrupt the divison, but merely to take hold of the racing interests of the coast and place them on a sound footing, something that the league was unable to do because it would not sanction Sunday racing. As long as this privilege was not dis- puted by the league those who have with- drawn to form a new affiliation of cyclists were willing to let matters remain as they were, though they did not feel tbat they were getting muach benefit from the old organization, inasmuch as large amounts of money were sent East from which tkere was absolutely no return, ‘When, however, the league decided not | to sanction Sunday meets the last bond | between the strong men in cycling and the league were severed, and secession and the formation of the Associated Cyclists followed as a matter of course. Up to the | present the Associated Cyelists have not | been overaggressive, merely getting what | members were willing to come in, buta | circular letter that has been sent out over | President Potter's signature has aroured | them to a pitch that means trouble on ail | hands. The letter reads as follows: To Ail Loyal Members of North California Divi- | sion: You unve u new chiel consui, 8 (ried, | loyal and able officer, in the person of Georgs | H. Strong, whose address is 220 Market sireet, | Ban Francisco. You bave a ioyal, zeslous and efficient vice-consul in the pcrson of Francis T. Dwyer, whose address is Sacramento. The | gentiemen whom you eiected a few montbs | 80 1o hoid division offices nave resigned and | have combined together in & conspiracy to destroy your division. You have received eir- culars from these Couspirators suggesiing that you join in this effort to make populsr word in a loyal State. s:ized the road books of tue division upon a vretended ciaim of debt, made by men who | were league members a few weeks ago, and have tried to wrest this properiy from the hands of the orgamzation. They have | calied in the services of the Shenft in order thai these road books fight| De sold iuto their own possession and used as weapons to further injure the North California | division. You have been eajoied and mis.ed. | Facts have been misstated, falsehoods invented | and every effort made to encourage the false impression that the wheelmen of the East are not your friends. You have been 10id thatine North California divisiou is “‘dissolved.” Let me suggest to you this fact: When a man re- signs irom the L.A. W. he takes nobody out but himseif. No man can ‘‘secede” for an- | other. Each secessionist is sole proprietor of | his own rascality. 1f these genticmen who | heve cleimed to represent your interests have | confused you follow the oid and safe rule: “When you are in doubt, fight.” Iam receiv- ing letiérs and postal cards from California by every mail, piedging the loralty of our old lesgue members. Send them hereaiter to Chiet Consul Strong, whose address 1 have given you. North California should be wide awske {rom this time on. _Your interests will be protected and every L A. W. member of North California in the 1897 will have reason 1o remember his_iovalty for sll time to come. | Isaac B. PoTTER, President. | The Associated Cyclists have taken off | their coats since this letter came to light, | and are prepared to do battle to the bitter | end. They point to the fact that Presi- | dent Potter has left the impression in his | letter that toe road books of the division are still tied up and that the secessionists | wanted to keep the books from the officers | of the league. “Why should we want those booki said a prominent member of the cyclists yesterday, “when we have in course of preparation the road book of the California Associated Cyclists, that eclipses the old book in every way? We are working night and day on this volume, and five of us put in the time between 6 o’clock Fri- day night and 5 o’clock Saturday morning | revising and improving the matter that is to go into it. i Tt will contain a table of distances and new maps that are far more accurate than those containd in the old division book | and will also eive the locations and terms | of the official hotels as well as the names | of local representatives throughout the | State. “We haveno fear that the league will ever get the upper hand in this State | again. When the fizht started the divi- | sion had 1700 members, now it has but 1100 and this ncmoer is decreasing daily. The difference represents the wembersnip of the Asscciated Cyciists, and the organ- ization is growing in popularity daily. “President Potier can roar and mis- represent facts as much as he pleases, but it don’t take arepresentative of the cyclists Jong to convince a wheelman of tue vastly | greater advantages of the association when compared with those of the league. “This is war to the knile, and when the | factis taken Into consideration that we already have in the association tue large majority of the best men in cycling in Caiifornia to-day and are gaming many new recruiis daily it will be seen that | there is no chance for the league to re- Blind Watchmakers. There have been blind watchmakers. In | former years there was one living at Hol- | beach, in Lincolnshire. His name was Rippin, and although completely blind, he could take to pieces and put together again watches of most delicate corstruc- tion with surpassing ea-e. He was robved once of some of the tiny belongings of his trade, such as wheeis, hair-springs, etc.; the thief was iraced, and Rippin jdentified and swore to Lis property by the touch. At Barnstable, too, in the early part of the present century, there was another such prodigy. His name was William Huntly; he was born blind, and was brought up by his fatherfwho was a clock and watch maker, to that business. The inhabitants had great faith in him, and he bad plenty of employment; musical clocks and watches even were repaired by him without difficu'ty; and it is said that in some cases where other tradesmen had failed to discover a defect, he detected the fault and set it right.” —Tit-Bits. ————— The Cost of Schooling. The number of children in the public day schoois of Boston is now about 72,000. For the past five years the increase has averaged oyer 2000 a yea st year it was considerably larger.” This is double the annual increase ten years ago, at which time, according to Superintendent Seaver’s Teport, the average annual expenditure for new schoolhouses was less than $200 for each new pupil. For the last two years this expenditure bas increased to nearly $268 for each child, bringing the | GRAND HOTEL. | A M Kistier & w, Eos:on J P Gibbs, Stanford HOTEL ARRIVALS. RUSS HOUSE.
