Women Are More -ubject to It Than Men, but Stand It Better. “Are women more subject to seasick- ness than men?”’ An Atlantic captain replies: “Yes; but, on the other hand, they stand it bet- ter. A woman struggles up to the point of despair against the—what I might call the impropriety of the thing, She isn’t so much tortured by the pangs as she is worried by the prospect of becoming dis- heveled, haggard and draggled. She fiznts against 1t to the last and keepsud appearances as long as she can hold up her heau. Then she becomes maudlin and pathetic. She takes to her rooms, and invariably asks three ques- tions. First, whether people die of sea- sickness; then how many miles we are from shore, end lastly when we shall get there. She also often asks how deep the water is, and if I think it possible for any one to go seven days without any food. The doctor is always talked over. Iam asked time and aguin if I think he is capable and efficient, and if I have con- fidence in bim. When the patient gets so ill that she loses interast in the doctor she usually lies on her side and cries by the hour. " But, luckily, the more violent at- | tacks oniy last & short time.” “How i« it with men?” Ob, men give in at once. They make a great rumpus until thev are compelled to take to their berths. Then they grum- ble and groan until they are well enough to go on deck again. A great many pi sengers come aboard loaded with medi- cines for the prevention of seasickness. 1 never knew a preventive yet, except care- ful dietin, BURMESE GIRLS. Gossiping and _Flirting They Fill Their Jars at the Well. In every household the daughter has her appointed work. In all but the richest merchants’ houses the daughter's duty is to bring the water from the well evening and morning, says Blackwood’s Magazine. It is the gossiping place of the village, this well, and as the sun sets there come running down all_the girls of the village. As they fill their jars they lean over the curb and talk, and it is here that are told the lates' news, the latest flirtation, the Iatest marriage, the little scandal of the place. Very few men come. Water- carrying is not their duty, and there is a proper ume and place for flirtation. So the girls Lave the well almost to them- seives. Almost every girl will weave. In every house there will be a loom, whers tha girls weave their dresses and those of their parents. And very many girls will have stalls in the bazaar. Other duties are the husking of the rice and the making of cheroots. Of course, in the richer house- holdx there will be servants to do all this, but even in them the daughte: will fre- quently weave, either for herself or for her parents. Almost every gsirl will do something, even if it be only to pass tne time. % o . THE CALL CALENDAR. May, 1897.
