Australis has tbe foilowing o sa about the wheat crop in Australin: “The wheut crop of Australia for the coming harvest Is short. 1t most be remembered that the seasons here are opposite trom ours, the cereal year beginning and ending about the 1st of July, as ours e Uniced States begins and ends about January 1. This ear) of which I am now writing, will end July 1 next, or, as far as wheat alone is concerned, say April next. esiimated by the most careful observers, falls o short of thé usual as to reduce Australasis from herposition as the sixth wheat-exporting country on the globe to about the elevench wheat-import- ing_country. 3 “From being an exporier of about 12.000,000 bushels per year A ustralasia will have to import not far from 5,000.000 to supply the deficlency from short crops. Thismisfortune o Austraiasia will be ©of considerable benefit (0 our beopie. not only be- cause the United States will supply the chief part of the nearly 5,00.000 bushels deficlency, but be- cause she will also supply s Iarge purt of tue world’s deficiency, cansed by the withbolding of the 12.000,000 ususily furnished by 3 nstralasta. Then, in the competiiive markets of the world, Australasis’s sbort crop makes u difference of about 17,000,000 bushels. With failure in India and a short crop throughout Europe tais will be no trifiing advnniage 10 the Wueal-yrowers of (he United States.” THE WEEK S FAILURES. Major Padrin of the Italian army has invented a very ingenious contrivance, which is designed to supersede the knap- sack. He has invented a vehicle to which be has given the name of the cvclosac, or he sack on wh-els. On this will be car- ried the baggage of two soldiers, and the uprights of the tent will be used to con- vertit into a sort of wheelbarrow, which the soldier can drag behind him when ascending or push before him when de- scending. The two soldiers will take it turn about to push or draw the gyclosac, and it is contended that this arrangement will not merely enable the troops to march much longer distances, but to fieht much better on the field of battle, being relieved of all impediments, which can be left in these light wheelbarrows in the rear.—Philadelphia Record. ————— Very old people need from a third to half a3 much food as when in their prime. e THE CALL CALENDAR.
