/ ] THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, FRIDAY, MARCH 12, N 1897. o e e e sl es el E S S - TIFED SHE HAS A THIRD EY Judge Slack Informed in Regard to Mystic Powers. Palmistry and Magnetic Healing Explained in a Will Contest Why B. D. Griggs, an Oid Miner, Gavz a Comparative S ranger $800 Judge Slack listened to a description of | ihe methods used by a so-called magnetic nealer in the treatment of a patient. He also received information in regard to clairvoyancy and palmistry. Mrs. £lls M. Stewart, who confesses that she bhas been blessed with three husbands but is now a widow, was the witness who con- tributed to the enlightenment of the court as to her profession in life, and incident- ally touching the manner in which she‘ the late B. D.| came to write a wiil for Grigss bequeathing $300 to hersel:. Mrs. Stewart is a well-preserved lady of about 50 winters, with a bread face, ample form becomingly clad, diamonds in her ears and rings on both hands. Her v is well modulated and she uses many ges- tures. The iady delivered her testimony in a very effective manner and was com- plimenied even by opposing counsel on the acumen she displayed in_presenting ner side of the controversy 1n its strongest light. She wore a hat trimmed with jets, and the giittering ornaments that milli- ners call aigreites shook defiantly, not to say threateningly, at Attorney Schell from time to ume as she answered his troublesome quest ons. “You call yourseif a clairvoyant, do you not?” asked Mr. Schell “You pretend to foretell the future of the lives of your subjecis, do you not?"" “I have the power of clairvoyance, if that is what you mean.’” “Will you please explain what you mean by that “I know things intuitively, or by con- centration of the mind, as 1t were. 1 bave tbat power. I do mnot pre- tend to explamn it. The seat of| that poweris just between the physical It is a third eve just here,” and she her forehead between the eye- brows. She does not seem to need a third ve, as the 1wo visual organs that are vis- 1b.e to the ordinuTy observer appear to be sufficient, They are black and piercing. This avowal of supernatural power 1apped e | appeared to overawe the lawyer, for he | pursued that inquiry no further. certained that sue pretendec to a knowl- edge of palmistry. She said she read G .d’s lines on the hand and interpreted his message, etic heali ¢ that s He as- 2 she also professes, and e cures by the laving on explax ot hands. She requires consideravie room for ner operstions, as it is necessary for her to throw the evil principie of the malady from her finger-tips at each move- ment, und she illustratea the process by her hands to her side with a Jotion. Jerky Coming to the case of Mr. Grigss, she said that when they met she saw at a glance that ne could not live. He applied to her for a diagnosis of his case, and after her usual formula hed been gone through, ncluding a turn at palmistry and the like, she toid him the troubié with him was that he had & pain at the pit of s | stomach, caused stance. He did not deny that, and she asked him 1f he had ever drunk from a mountain siream. He repiied: *Oh, yes. lam a n.ner, and ofien drink from ibe snow springs of the mountains.” “Then 1 asked him if he remembered to have ever swallowed a frog or a lizard. “No,’ he r-plied, ‘vut thet reminds me of one time I was robbed. They gave me chloroiorm and thrust the neck of the bottie and the stopper down my throat. The piece of bottle znd stopper were of rubber, and they remained in my stomach for u long time, but at last I got some meaicine that relieved me of them.’ “Then 1 asked Mr. Griggs 1f he had ever eaten any pork and he said: ‘Why, yes, whiie I was in tbe mountains [ almost lived on ham and bacon.’ So I said to him, ‘Well, thut expiains it. That Las made it worse.” Mr. Scuell called the attention of the witness 1o the fact that ali the physicians in the case had testified that the trouble of the dead man was not'in the stomach, but was in the lower bowels, and asked ber if she was willing tc put Ler clairvoy- ant diagnosis agamst the expert opinion of the medical experts, when they de- clared that the trouble was in the lower ntestines? “That wus 2 mistake. He never had a pain there,’”’ was her posiiive reply. When asked how she came 10 ve named in tie will for §800 of the §: S when she haa known M only a few weeks, Mrs. answered that her patient grateiul to her for the had given him, and that he wished to show his appreciation. She said she wrote the wiil sirictly at his dgictation. She had not expected s legacy. Sue ad- Stewart seemed relief mitted ihat she rubbed his nead and called | him ‘“dear,” but said she would do that with any old man v ho was her patient. She also told with a merry laugh of how she combed Lis hair on one occasion, and then related the fact that he cried when he was about to move from the lodging- hou-e in which she lived. He kept his door locked and she had a secret signal by which she obtained admittance. In the evidence it was developed that Mrs. Stewart and another beneiciary un- | der the will signed as attesting witnesses, and afterward she concluded that two dis- interested witnesses ought to be secured, and that was done. She said the thought that disinterested witnesses cught to be | obtained came to her after the first sign- ing. It might be called clairvoyancy if you like,” she added. “But why didu’t clairvoyancy give you that hint in the first time?” was sug- | gested. The witness could not answer, and the case was put ovar for argument. DOUBLE-EAGLES JINGLED. The Jocund Owner of Wealth Was Dan- gerously Near Contempt of Court. In Jucdge Slack’s court yesterday some one among the spectators caused consid- erable annoyance by jingiing money in his pocket. The sound was like that of a stack of $20 pieces being raised gently by the end of the thumb and then let drop gently back into their comfortabie place. It wae a clear case of contempt of court, and if the bailiff could bave detected ihe culprit he would have been punished. Several newspaper reporters were present, but they were not suspected by the generovs-minded Judge. The lzwyers appeared perturbed for a short time as it looked like a piece of neglect for them to let any of their clients be running loose with ready money in their pockets. Finally a plethoric-looking stranger who looked as if he might be from Chicago and had strayed into the couriroom out of a feeling of idle curiosity, arose and passed out into the corridor, after whicn the nuisance was immediately abated, e Fined a Drug Clerk. J. F. Michell, a clerk in Leon di Nola’s drug- by some foreign sub- | she | store on Haight street, was yesterday fined §50 by Judge Campbell for filling & preseripiion without being licensed to do so. The com- piaint was mede by Secretary Dawson of the State Board of Pharmacy. e Hurriet Cooper’s Will. Gunnison, Booth and Bartnett have filed a somewhat contradictory document in the es- tate of the late Harriet Coover. They first ad- mit that she died intestate and then allege that she left a will that is olographic in form and aver that she was of sound mind when she signed the instrument, and demand that the will shall be admitted 'to probate, In view of the antagonistic elements of the pleadings the decision of the Probate Court will be awaited with interest. —————— REAL ESTATE TB;ANSAGTIONS.
