Mrs. Magdalena Wittemier has been cited to appear in Judge Coff-y's court on the 26th of this month and show cause why she shouid not be punished for con- tempt of court. of J. G. Wittemier, deceased, and was ordered to pay to Jokn C. Huches, a assizuee of A. G. W $1000. For some reason best known to herself the lady refused to obey the order of the court, thus laying herself liabie to a term of service in the bastile of the County on Broadway. It is unusual to see 8 woman even threatened with imprisonment for disobeying the orders of a court. and the outcome of the fairlitigant’s contumacious behavior will be watched with interest. -— ! Mrs. Wittemier is executrix of the will VESSELS DAMAG N THE STORM One Stricken by Lightning and Another Lost Her Deckload. | Oificers of Gasoline Schooners Must Now Have a Licens=. Chiet Wharfinger Root Is Happy Ov 't the R covery of His Buil Pup. | The owners, masters and encineers of gasoline schooners are in trouble. Accord- ing to alaw which went into effec: last month they must all have a certificate from the Inspectors of Hulls and Boilers before they can take a vessel to seaor navigate the waters of the bay. The ves- sels principally involved are the Moro, Hettie B, Gerald C, Barbara Hernster, | Bessie K, Nowark, Monterey, Chetco, Jes- | sie Madison and halfa dozen others. All | of these vessels, according to the law | | | signed by President Cleveland, are com- pelled to carry a licensed captain and a licenced engineer, and the owners are in a quandary. The different societies of master mariners and marine engineers areafter them and the inspectors have given them dus warning that the law must be obeyed, and that at once. As the success of the gasoline boats has been due entirely to the fact that they could berun at a smail expense, the chances | are that when licensed officers with large salaries are put in them thiey will not pay running expenses and will be laid up. Chief Wharfinger Root had a pleasant experience yesterday. A couple of weeks as he had given up ail hope of ever seeing the animal again a couple of young men walked past the office with the dog on a string. Root did not wait for hat, but ran out and said, *“Where did you get that pup, boys?”’ “Found nim, want a buyer. mister,” +“Bring him inside,” said Root, and the | dog was soon under examination. Halfa dozen people identified him and when the | chief examined his hind leg and showed | where it had been broken in two places the men gave in and left the place. They wanted pay at the rate of 40 cents a day for twelve days for feed, but Root showed them the door and they went. | The Norwegian bark Nordlyset has been chartered tor South Africa. The vessel is now in Oakland Cre:k discharging her cargo of coal, and in a few days she will go to Port Dosta to load wheat. Cape Colony is short of grain, and 1n a few days other vessels among the disengaged fleet will be chartered to go to that end of the earth wheat lade: | Captain Alex Bergman wentout in com- mand of the ship Big Bonanza. The ves- sel goes to Tacoma to load lumber for San Francisco. Captain Alex bought out his brother Adoliph, and the latter is now a pertner in the firm of Simpson & Fisher. He is an expert sail-maker, and since he lost his wife in Cape Town during the last voyage of the Big Bonanza he made up his mind to remain ashore. As his brother was more than anxious to get to sea again it did not take long for them to change places. The whaling bark Lydia went into the stream yesterday minus fourteen of her | erew. She came to an anchor off Howard street, and late in the evening the men were rounded up and taken out tc the ves- sel in wheleboats. When they sober up | to-day the Lydia will put to sea. | Monday will be a gala day on the mon- |itor Camanche. Governor Buad and a joint committee from the House and Sen- | ate will be the guests of the Naval Battal- ion. The members of the first and sec- | ond divisions will be out in force, and a was the answer, “and we You can have him for $20, | principal attraction of the day. The | course will be from the Camanche to Mis- sion Rock and bacl The first division will be represent-d by George Green, Frank Murphy, J. Meyer, P. Murry, W. ‘Geislor, R. Schnallon, and Jack Healey cockswain. The second division will have in its boat H. Schroder, W. Oder, H. Hansen, | C. Johnson, 0. Undgren, A. Halliday, and | T, Rowe coxswain. TLho race is going to be a close one, but division 1 seems to have the call in the betting. All the coasters had a rough time of it | during the Inst few days. The schooners | Helen imball, Mary Reiss and | Fannie Claudine, from Eureka; the ship | Oriental and bark Wilna, from Departure Buy, and barkentine Retriever, all suffered more or less, The Oriental beat the Re- | triever into port, but the British ship | Dovenoy Castle, also from Departure | Bay, beat both of the American vessels eusily. | _The schooner Mabel Gray, from San | Diego for Kureka, suffered more than any | of the vessels. During the storm of the 17th inst., lightning struck the foremast bead and ran down tae forestay, carrying away tiie foremast about six feet from the deck and also the mainmast about fifteen feet from the deck. The jibboom aiso carried away, so the captain at once hoisted signals of distress and was towed into port late last night, The schooner Corinthian lost her fore- | sail and putback, and the Emma Utter lost some of ber sailsand shifted her deck- load of lumber to port, while the Chris- tena Stcffins lost her entire deckload off Fisk's Mill. Al in all the lumber schooners and coasters had a hard time of ir.
