NEW YORK, N. Y., Jan. 29.—R. G. Dun & Co. will say to-morrow in thelr weekly review of trade: January has been & month of disappoint- ment, but not of reul gain. Nearly everybo y had promised himself aland of milk snd honey afier New Year's, and the slow progress looks like stand- ing still to meu of such a mind. Moreover, there are multitudes throughout the country who have been taking large ventures in advance of or apary from their regular business because they expected a rise in prices. But prices fail as ye: (o bring them profit. Wheat declined severely. Cotton has scarcely risen enough to pay brokerage. Wool holds steady in spite of emormous buying. Woolen goods have made no improvement. Leather is sluggish. Hides are lower. he average of railroad stocks is slightly lower than it was December 31. and the advance in trust stocks has been small. ‘10 traders in such properties the month hes been disappolnUing, yet during the week the record shows that ten iron worss have started and only two have stopped. Thirteen wooien works have started and many more are about ready Lo siari, while three have stopped. s Similar things are s>en in other indnstries and the additional establishments are not stariing without some increase in orders recelved. 1t would 4o more harm than £ood L0 exaggerate the improvement. buta study of the conditions gov- erning business ind.cates that the wheels are on the rizht (rack und moving in the risht direction. Men talked of a possible draln of goid a month 20, but Junuary has passed and the liquidation of foreign indebiedness to this country seems further off than ever. Merc audise exports from New York in Jaunuary bave been about i5 per cent smaller than last_vear's when the excess of ex- ports was over 818,000,000, while exports from other ports have also been arger. The month his vot diminished butincreased he current balance Que this country. Money markets become more easy aud favorable to lexitimate business. The reduction in wheat was over 6 cents, in spite of a reporied yield far below tha generally accepied, reflecting perception of the error of Ui repors and the enormous exports of corn—80,000,000 bushe.s in efght months. When corn can be had for less than wheat it i largely preferred in European markets, and in Jaouary 7,875,127 bushels of corn has gone abroad from Aclantic ports against 5,630,419 lusy year, while Atlantic_exports of wheat and flour bave been 6,515,135 bushels against 8,843 6 inst year. As the Government crop of corn pre- verted much advance in its price it al 0 affecis the demand for wheat, and a heavy liquidat.on has oc- curred, with the price of corn scarcely chsnging. Cotton 100ks less altractive to traders because American millers are Jaboring with plans to re- duce a large surylus of goods and prices have de- clined. Takings of Noithern spinners have been in five months 44,000 bales less Lhau last year aud 425,000 less Lhan in 1894-93. Sales 0f wool in January have never been sur- passed in that month nor in any other month ex- cept last November and July of 1895 and 1892. The price has remained about steacy. ‘ihe iron and steel mauufactures sbow little gains, production having increased so heavily be- fore, and the gradual enlargement 0 demand for finished producis has not overtaken that {ncrease. Lower prices result_for Bessemer pig, gray 1orge and for Southern irou a: Chicao, for cut nails, and the average of all quotations Is the largest siuce .astyear. For sheets there is active de- mand and better demand ior bars on account of car-building. Tin and copper are a shade stronger, but competition causes sales of tin plates LU@L5¢ below the agreed prices. Fallures for the week have been 331 In the United States, a:ainst 404, and 50 in Canada, agalnsi 70 lust year. BANK CLEAKINGS. NEW YORK, N.
