nd (&) THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, TUESDAY, JANUARY 26, 1897 T HIMSELE OVER THE HEART. C. C. Nordhausen, an Oak- land Merchant, Has a Narrow Escape. :1 There Is a Likelihood the Patient Will Recover at St. Luke’s. An E:rly Morninz Tragedy in the | Baldwin Hot:l1 After a Pro- tracted Debauch. C. C. Nordhausen, a guest at the Bald- win Hotel, tonched the button yesterday morning, and when J. 1. Pettit, a beliboy, responded, informed him in a matter-of- fact way: “I want (o go to St. Luke’s Hospital.” The lad found the guest disheveled and blear-eyed, lying on a lounge, his clothing April Charles fell heir to part of his say- ings, and in October he sold the store to his nephew and retired Jrom business. During the summer, however, he had taken a trip to Europe and through the East. It is estimated that he is worth about $75,000. The Reliance building on San Pable av- anue and Seventeenth strapt was the joint property of tbe two biotuers. Besides a wife Mr. Nordhausen has four children, the oldest about 15 years. Mr. Nordhausen was public spirited, taking greac interest in every project ad- vanced for the city's interest, and alto- gether was one of the most popular mer- chants on Broacway. ——————————— AN AUTHORITY ON FISHES. Professor Gilbert of Stanford Will Ad- dress the Fly-Casting Club. Professor Gilbert of the Stanford Uni- versity will address the members of the Fly-casting Club this evening, and his subject will be tne salmon and trout of the Pacific Cosst. The meeting will be held in the office of the Fish Commission, Floed building, and ail anglers interested in matters piscatorial are invited. Pro- fessor_Gilbert ranks next to Professor Starr Jordun as the leading authority of this country on il questions tnat periain | to fishes. — e CHRISTIAN ATHLETES. Newly Elected Officers of the Young Men’s Triaugle >wimming Club. The semi-annual election of officers of the Trisngle Swimming Club of the Young Men's Christian Association re- sulted as follows: Captain, J. A. Geddes; first lieutenant, -S. McDougall; second lieutenant, John A. Jackson; secretary, C. C. NORDHAUSEN. charred as if by some application of 2 hot | iron or coal. | re you ill?” No; not very. dentally.” That was enough for the boy. He ran as he never did before, and, while still out of breath, he reached the cffize with the startling announcement that: “Dere's a man what shot hisself up- stairs, and he wants to go toder hospital.” Manager Lake proceeded to the guest's | room, where he was joined by Dr. Taylor, | who Jives in the house, and for whom he | had sent. | Nordhausen was suffering greatly, but refused all assistance, A gasjet, unlighted, was found to be turned on, emitting its deadly fluid, and | when his attention was cailed to it and it was turned off, he said H I don’t care; let it aione.” | The man had apparently endeavored to | commit suicide. He had been drinking | beavily since Saturday night, when be | registered at the hotel. His baunts had | been those of the tenderloin, where back | rooms abound, and when he Teturned to | his apartment at an early hour Sunday | morning he was very much the worse for | his many libations. ; During Sunday he repeatedly rang up | belltoys, who furnished him with more | | | | | I only shot myself, acci- | liquor as he orgered it. His head was bandaged in a manner that showed he had been his own attendant, and now it is the ugly gash under the intended assumed that towel was caused by a bullet he to be a messenger of death. The hotel people discovered an exploded cartridge in the bathroom, and there was another in the revolver which Nordhau-en handed over, showing that two shots had been fired. The second, and main wound, was found about an inch above the left | nipple, the bullet ranging inward to the | ribs and around to the back, where Dr. Armstead of St. Luke’s Hospital found it under the skin, The Baldwia peovle wired to Mrs. Nord- nausen at 1322 Adeline street, Oakland, | the wife of tne wounded man, and she reached tie hospital yesterdav afternoon with her nephew, C. J. Heesmean, who, | with his uncle, has been in the clothing | business st 1051 Broadway, Oakland. | Neither of the relatives could under- stand the cause of the man’s rash act, and, although the physicians declare there | is hardly any danger of his death from the wound inflicted, they gave strict instruc- tions that he should not be seen -by any strangers Scout the Idea of Suiclde. OAKLAND, Car., Jan. —Mrs. Nord- hausen und Uharles Heeseman, nephew of | C. C. Nordhausen, retuined home to-night after visiting St. Luke' Hospital “The stories of attempted suicide are absolutely without foundation,” said Mr. Heeseman to-night. *“Mr. Nordhau sen | went to S8an Francisco Baturday to meet a party that was to accompany him to Randsburg, whers he was to have gone to-day. He only returned from Rands- | burg last week, where he has a large busi- ness interest, which has proved a very successiul venture. He was to return to- day and was at the Baldwin, where he always stays when across the bay. I saw himand talked a long time with him to- day, and he assured me that he had no in- tention whatever of taking his life. He is a stranger to firearms and never carried them in his life till he went to Randsburg. **His financial standing is good. and his home reiations are the most pleasant, and 1am convinced that the whole affair was an accident. It is only a flesb wound, and bad he contemplated suicide he woula | never have inflicted such a wound as he is suffering from. The proprietor of the Baldwin Hotel assured me that there is not a particle of truth in the story that | the gas in s room was turned on.” 1 C. C. Nordhausen is one of the most active business men in this City and a director of the Board of Trade. He came to this city from the South in | 1876, and two years later he and his brother, Ernest A. Nordhausen, opened a | small store on Broadway, between Fitth | and Sixth streets, whiclh they conducted until 1885, when they moved to Eleventh street and Broadway. Thislatter store is still conaucted by a nephew, Charles F. Heeseman. When Ernest Nordhausen died last / | ¥ C K ibourne. Seattle | S Jobnson & w, N Y F. D. Morrell; treasurer, G. D. Klarman. Dr. H. L. Dieiz was elected starter and G. | D. Klarman timekeeper. A reception will be tendered to Howard F.
