ALEXANDER MCADIE, Local Foracast Official NEW YORK MARKETS Financial. NEW YORE, N. Y., Jan. 24 —Speculation at the Stock Exchange was qulet again to-day, the sales | aggregating only 129.953 sbates. In this small total sugar figured for 19.500, Burlington for 16,800 and St Paul 12,300. The opening was quiet, following which an advance of 4@l per cent took place. This was partly the resultof a reduction in the posted rates of steriiog exchange of 4 from $4 85145@4 87%, and partly because the bears did no continue their raid of Saturday. T he loss in St. Panl earnings for the third week of January, which proved to be much smailer than expected, was also used with good effect. London again sold n the local market, parting with 5000 shares of various stocks. In th- industrial group General Electric was no- tably firm on the announcement of the deal for the equipping of the Fourth, Sixth and Eighth avenue surface lines had been perfected. Tobacco, however, was down 7 t0 7514 on the legal com- plications of the company. The feature of the afternoon trading was the heaviness of the anthracite coalers. Lackawanna fell 215 to 152: Delaware and Hudson, 234 Lo 10635 Jersey Central, 2 to 98, and Read!ng, 7 1025 34 The selling was based on the belief that the an- nual reports of the larger companies now about due will compare unfavorable with previous years. Statements that the New York and fsca one of the Delaware and Hudson leased iines. issued 51,000,000 of 415 per cent gold debenture bonds last year led w irce selling of Delaware- Hudson shares and played right into the hands of the bears. The general list yleided 214 from the highest of the morning in sympathy with the coal- ers, but in the final dealings there was a fractional rally. The market cio-ed weak in tone. Net changes snow losses of 4 @54 per cent in the gen. eral list. Bouds were firmer to-day.
