McGregor IL Sugar Foot, an 01¢s-On Cho'ce, Beaten by N.c Nac—Fi Fi Scores Again in a Hurdie Event. From the size of the assembled crowd that viewed the racing at Emeryville yes- terday it was suspected by the close guessers that there were just a few ab- sentees from the usual Saturday clique of race patrons. This fact can be easily ac- counted for. Many dizzy, warm equine idols have been smashed to atoms during the two weeks of sport just ended yester- day, and troublous times have been ex- perienced by form players. In disgust at what they termed ill luck many have re- frained from taking the trip across the bay, awaiting the reopening of Ingleside track, hoping to regain favor with fickie Dame Fortune. Tuoe day was cloudy and cool, but the track was fast and most of the events were tuken in fust time, met with poor success, but two of the favored ones in the betting managing to head their fields out. Nearly all the members of the ring fraternity quit good winners of the day’s booking. The Alameda handicap for all sges, over a mile, worth $700 to the first horse, was the feature of the card. Waterbouse stable scratched Mt. Gregor 1I and let Caspar, with 98 pounds up, try for the prize. Starting at 8 and 10 to 1 in the betting he made the run- ning and was only nipped out the last few strides by Ed Purser’s good filly Scarf Pin, the 2ta 1l favorite, which reeled off the distance in 1:4114. St. Lee with top weight up was a good third. The result of the third race at seven and a half furlongs was the surprise of the aay. Drawn from the stake event especially to prune his companv in this affair, Mt. Mc- Gregor LI, with 109 pounds up, was con- sidered the “‘pipe” of the aft-rnoon’s pro- ceedings. Backed from 1 to 2downto2 to 5, he encaged in a_battle royval from start to finish with Yankee Doodle and, outfooted the iatter partof the journey, was compelled to acknowledge deieat by a scant bead. Show hon.rs went to David, a 50 to 1 shot. Another one of the cinchy sort was laid to rest in the opening high-weight handi- cap, over a distance of six furlongs. Barney Schreiber’s Sugar Foo', with 101 ponnds in the saddle, was supposed to be invincible, but quit badly in the stretch, and Nic Nac, against which 10 to 1 was at one time laid, beat the 3 to 1 chance out a head in 1:15 flat. Nebula, ridden by J. Ward, was the recipient of the short end of the purse. Green Morris dropped Lobengula in the mile and a furlong selling run, and the brown horse did not have much to beat. He went to the post at odds of 2to 5 and won without difficulty from St. Aignon, a 20 to1 outsider. Scimitar, heavily backed to get the place, was third. Lefeat awaited another favorite in the fifth evant, a six furlong spin, with a field of eight starting. Sent to the post at odds Favorites again | he Burns & | of 11 to 5 the Baldwin entry, E-taca, wns easily outfooted by Etta H, carrying 110 poundsand a 6 to L shot in the ring. He lo was a 214 to 1 cboice for the mils and a half hurdie handicap, but the 150 pounds up anchored him, ‘or he failed (0 fini-h within the money. Fi Ki, at 6 to 1 proved a handy winner over J O C, th second choice, taking the lead soon aiter passing the suind aud holdiag it o the end. BN hel NOTES. On the strength of the improved show- inz made by Yaunkee Dood.e yesterday, Jockey Coady, who rode that horse when be finished iast on January 19, was sus- pended pending further investigation. Jockey George Snider, who was sus- pended some weeks agn at Eneryville ior a poor rid: on Defender, was reinstated yesterday. REAL ESTATE 1RANSACTIONS. Martha A. Chandler to Gertrule C.
