NEW YORE MARKETS, Financial. NEW YORK, N. Y., Jan. 21.—The tendency of the stock market was toward a lower range of prices again to-day. Considering the sharp break in some specialties and other develupments, how- ever, the general list heid steady, the decline for the day iu such stocks as the grangers, Chi- cago Gas, Sugar and Louisvilie and Nashville showing losses of 14 to 11 per cent. Quotations from London came lower & the opznins, showing that the reduction in the Bauk of England rate had been discounted. This was a disappolntment 10 the bulls, while 1t encourfiged the bears to re- new their eftrts at bammering the arket. The dullness and absence of the outside orders was agninst an Improvement in prices. Sugar figured for 51,300 for a total in the whole list of 163.700 sbares, but in a majority of instances the demand ‘was unusually light. The sensational event of the day was a break of 1284 in Rocking Valley preferred to 40 and of 833 in the common (0 8%. The decline was started by an effort to margin & small amount of stock. Cal. & Va. is sald to be the cause of this firmne-s. A streak of ore, varylng in width from 15 £ 20 Inches, has been found in new gro nd. It lies somewnat flat across the face of the excava- tion, its upper pars belng 16 Inches wide and its lower part 20 Inches wide. About three or four tons of the ore have bren taken out thus far, and the average asssy value s over $200 per ton, some of (he samples going below and others above that figure.
