THREW SHIELDS AND RAN AWAY Scotch Rose, Favorite for the Siake, Was Then Excused. After This Accident Arrezzo Won Driving From Sen- ator Morgan. Lucky Dog Likei the Muddy Going. With Joe Terry Left, All Over Had a Cake-Walk. A large crowd attended the reopening day at Oakland track and between watch- ing Scotch Rose, favorite for the stake event, throw her rider and run away, an- other pronounced choice left at the post and e weary, tedious wait for a boat at the conclusion of the sport, the majority of them felt ill-tempered enough to go into the parachute-jumping business or join the Cuban service by the time they again reached the Frisco side, long after dinner time. The track on the other side was favored with a cloudy sky and a muddy track for its reception day. B8ix well-filled events were down for decision and seventeen lay- ers of odds cutin. Withal, things drag- gled along and the bookies compiained of a light play. The favorites succeeded in carrying away four of the purses hung up. Mr. Ferguson started in well jenough with his gate work, but it grew a trifle freckled and lumpy before he got through. When he leit Joe Terry and Articus standing at the post in the iasi event a big crowd con- gregated around the judges’ stand after All Over had romped in, and intermingled with hisses were loud cries that bets be declared off. This, of course, was an im- possibility. The special feature of the card was the Produce Exchange stake for two-year- old at five and a hali furlongs worth $950 to the winner and it resuited most disap- pointingly. A. E. Leigh’s good colt Arrezzo with 121 pounds, ridden by J. Gardner, carried off the laurels in 2 drive irom Senator Morgan with the others straggling in. Scotch Rose ruled & 3to 2 choice with Racina a strongly played sec- ond. The others,a very ordinary lot, bar- ring Arrezzo, were almost friendless. At the post Arrezzo, Hanetta and the favorite were all fretful, delaying the start, Thinking at one time Ferguson was going to pull the lever Shields on Scotch Rose came with 2 rush and was rudely jerked from his saddle by the webbing. The filly then made a circuit of the track once and a half niderless. The filly was then allowed to be drawn, the field was recalled and twenty minutes allowed for a new book. After this Racina was made an 11 t0 10 choice, but failed to get a mark. Pulling out of the bunch after being straightened away in the stretch, Gard- ner brought Arrezzo in winuer by three parts of a length from Senator Morgan, a 10 to 1 shot. Hanetta, with Patsy Fre: man up, was a fair third, The winner went to the post at odds of 4to 1. The opening six-furlong run went to the 1 to 2 favorite Good Times, who won driv- ing, a length before Flashlight. The lat- ter horse, with Thorpe up, made s bold bid for the money. With Jones up, Shield Bearer ran a improved race over his last attempt. He was & 2 to 1 choice for the race following over six and a half furlongs, and in adrive succeeded in downinz Schnitz half a length. Charles A was a close third. There were only three starters in the mile run, and, ruling a 4 to 5 favorite, Mount McGregor 11 led throughout. down- inc Bir Play bandily at the end. Rey del Bandidos was beaten off. The win of Lucky Dog in the fifth event, another six and a balf jurlong affair, was also of the processiona! order. The big Darebin horse was a9 o 10 favorite and led his field from the jump, scoring with the utmost ease. Major Cook was second, ten lengths ahead of Jim Bozeman. With the 7 to 5 favorite Joe Terry, and Articus, another well-played one left standing at the post, there was nothin, to the mile and a furlong run but All Over. Shields got a flying start and he won all the way under double wraps, win- ning in pulling-up fashion from Red Glenn. Notes and Entries. Grannan was reported to have made quite a “’killing’’ over the win of All Over. B & W was scratched from the stake race on account of sickness. months gathering together some runners, was at the track yesterday for the first time this season. Mr. Legg has entered in stakes Ferryman II, Frank Jaubert, Lew Hopper and others. Shields was fined $100 and restricted to riding for his own stable the next thirty days for nmm%tin: to heat the gate with Scotch Rose. he judges also state they were getting very tired of the young man’s pranks at the post.
