12 THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 1896 e —————————— et e e e et et e e e e e CLOSE FINISHES AT OAKLAND The Luck Still Follows in the Wake of the Favorites. Little Cripple Hard Ridden to Beat t e 15 to I Out sider, Coda. Shield Bearer Liked the H-avy Going. Torsina Beat the Favorite, Sir Play, in a Gal op. Itisnot very tempting to the owner of a good handicap horse to see boys gather- ing up stones in buckets between races, yet that was the sight presented at Oak- land track yesterday. The top dressing of dark loam put on the new course seems to be full of small stones, and the gallopers are continually raising them to the sur- face. Already it is said one or two horses have been lamed by stepping on them, and this in part no doubt accounts for the scarcity of good horses starting. The weather 1n the afternoon was clear and cool; and altbough the track was slow, the finishes in nearly every instance were close and exciting. The favorites found the road rough and rocky, for but two returned with the coin. The brown colt Inflammator, who seems to have struck a winning clip, repaid his backers well by beating the even moneyv choice Principle out a8 nose at odds of 12 | tol. It was only by the narrowest of margins that Little Cripple, heavily supported at evens, took the mile selling affair. Coda, a 15 to 1 shot, made all the running, and, hanging on stubbornly, was just ncsed out on the wire by the favorite, on which Bob Isom was compelied to do some very tall hustling. Navy Biue was third. The start was a very poor one, Bombazette and Seaside being turned sideways when the barrier flew up. Frank Phillip’s mud-runner, Shield Bearer, carried the bulk of the coin bet on | the eight starters in the six-furlong run that followed, and, ieading from the jump, reached the wire a neck before the 15 t0 1 outsider, Flashlight, well ridden by Al Snaw. Doubtiful, backed from 15 and 20 to 1 down to 8, was a poor third. The big bettors were badly dumped over the result of the scven-furlong purse event. Sir Play was backed for big bundles of wealth to win, and atone time his chances looked most favorable. Racing away in the lead with Johnny McHale tbe second choice, he shook him off in the stretch, only to be passed by Torsina and beaten out with ease. Johnny McHale hung on gamely, finishing buta nose further away. The Burns and Waterhouse entry Miulo was a prohibitive 2to 5 chance for the con- cluding six-furlone run, and cut a very sorry figure. Hymn, the second choice, made a runaway race of it, jogging in the handiest of winners from Ricardo. The fayorite was a aistant third. YEARLINGS AT ATUCTION. Annual Sale of Antrim Stock Farm Thoroughbreds and Horses in Training—The Prices. The fourth annual sale of the thorough- bred yearlings and horses in training bred at Antrim stock farm, Bakersfield, Cal., took place at Killip & Co.’s salesyard last evening, under the glare of the electric light. The youngsters disposed of were the get of the stallions Rio Bravo and Apache. Nearly all of the local and visit- ing Eastern turfmen were present, and considering the dullness of the horse mur- ket the prices realized wer: good. The seventeen yearlings that passed under the hammer brought $4420, and four horses in training sold for $655. ‘ollowing 'is a iist of the colts and fitlies sold and the purchasers: B. c., by Rio Bravo, dam Cinderells, $600, A. ic | 3 K Donervan, Chicago W H Whit Stemler; b. c., by Apache-Brook, $300, W. Rehearing Ordered by the Supreme Court in the Case of Spence Against Widuey- The Supreme Court has granted a re- hearing in the matter of Anna M. Spence, executrix of the last will of E. F. Spence, deceased, against Wiiney and others, re- versing the decision of October 16 last. Spence deeded lands to a board of trustees, to provide an extensive astronomical ob- servatory and equipment for the Univer- sity of Southern California. Speuce was one of the trustees. The necessary funds were not raised to meet ‘the payments for lenses for the creat telescope as they ar- rived from Europe, and after some deliber- ation it was decided to seil them to the University of Chicago, where they now are. Mrs. Bpence wants to obtain posses- sion of the land. The case was decided just about one month ugo, but, on peti- tion, & rehearing has been ordered before the court in bank. Whetner the University of Southern California will ever get teles- copic facilities from the Spence property is still uncertain. —————— A New Lifeboat. Major Blakeney of the life-saving service called for bids for the construction of another boat for the life-saving station at Golden Gste Park. It is to be self-bailing and self-righting and twenty-eight feet long. The present boat is t00 heavy to pull over the beach sands. The new boat will weigh a little over a ton. The old boat, which is one of the besi on the coast, will probably be sent to the new Point Bonita station when the station is built. It can there be launched from the ways, which will be sim- ilar in many respects to those at the Presidio. | The new boat will be built after the model of the old boat. 5 ——————— HOTEL ARRIVALS.
