HAMMON, Forecast Official. fresh NXW YORK MARKETS, Financial. EW YORK. N. Y., Oct. 7.—The tendency of prices at the Stock Exchange was downward. Money on call ruled firm, the averaze rate being sharp 8 per cent, and in addition there were sensa- tional rumors from Europe which exerted an un- tavorable influence. The firmness of mercantile was the most important factor, zithough the with- drawal of gold for hoarding purposes was not without its infiuence. Dealers in bullion reported « demand for th> metal at 14 per cent commission, while options (o cali go.d auring the next (Lree months were freely sold at 1 per cent premium. Sugar was the most active siock, figuring for 43.800 shares in a xrand total of 180,119 shares. The st0ck broke from 110 to 10734 and closed at 107%. It lacked support throughout, and was 0ld on a Tepor: that the Arbuckle Bros., coffee merchants, intended entering the sugar refinery business. Manhatian fell on exiensive realizi- tions. The drop of 234 per cent in Illinols Central 0 8914 was due 10 sales by a prominent Broadway commission firm. The stock was taken by a bouse with foreign connectious. The losses in the other promiuent stocks ranged from 15 to 135 per cent, The Grangers, Louisvide and Nushville, General Electric and Metropolitan Traction all perticipat- ing in _the dowuward movement. ‘Lhe favorabie ews of the day, such as the weakness of the ster- ling exchanges, the engagement of $500,000 gold in Lonaon for shipment to New York and the prospect of an eariy settlement of the rate war in the South, were either ignored or overlooked by traders who for the moment are on the short side. Speculation closed weak in tone. Net changes show losses of 114@154 per cent. onds were active and weak. Sales footed up 109,000. ~ Atchison general fours fell 134 to 7314, do adjustmen: 114 10 3434.
