Y., Aug. 4.—In the first fitteen minutes' business at the Stock Exchange this morning the market was active and excited, prices dropped anywhere from 110 35% per cent under heavy offerings for both acconnts. The de- moralization was due to the announcement of the- fallure of Moore Bros. of Chicago. The firm had peen intimately convected with the Diamond Mutch Company and the New York Biscuit Com- any, snd their suspension was a great surprise Rire’ The report that the liabliities of the con- cern were $2 00U was not generaily credited. New York has had very little interes: in the shares of the Diamond Match Company, which it 1s nnderstood brought about the embarrassment of the Moores, and after the break at the opening in the Western railroad and industries local opera- tors were inclined to take a calmer view of the situation. The fallure will undoubtedly have some influence on the money market later on, and to this extent it will be reflected in stocks. To-day call loans were worth 3@334 Ter cent at one time, but near the close borrowers were accommodated at 116@2 per cent. In time loans bankers have raised their rates to 614 per cent, and the commercial paper market is decidedly stiffer. At the op ning the grangers, the industrials and other issnes which are traded in by Western operators suffered the heaviest losses. Later on it was reported from Chicage that & movement was on fo0t to_protect Diamond Match stock, and this checked the selling move- 3nent at the local board. Near the close the early sellers endeavored to cover and the prominent issues rallied 14@2% per cent. Speculation closed firmer in ton’. et changes, however, show a decline of @214 per cent. Total sales were only 165,112 shares. Bouds were lower. Sales were $483,000. American Cotton Uil debenture exghths fell 234 to 3034. Aug. 4.—The topic of interest on the Board ot Trade this morning was the news of the failure of the Moore Bros., and conjecture was general as to what the effect on Diamond Match and New York Biscult would be, and in turn they would affect wheat. Before the market opened occasion was taken to hammer priceson the curb, and first official figures were about a cant under yesterday’s final ones. But the pit was well supplied with buying orders at the start, indi- cating no lack of confidence, and prices generally rallied cousiderably. Board of Trade people have, as arule, been bearish of the securities above re- ferred to, and as shoris they would be the bene- ficiaries of a slump._ in prices. Receipts were lib- eral, Chicago having 265 cars, and the Northwest 450, Liverpool opening cables were firm. Local inspections irom store were 69,800 bushels, and 480,641 bushels cleared at the seaboard. The amount on ocean passage decreased 1,040,000 bushels. The world’s: shipments last week amounted to 4,808000 bushels. Sales of cash wheat aggregated 106,000 bushels, for Eastern shipment communicated additional firmness 0 prices. Closing Continenta! and English cables were all higher. Bradstreet’s reported a decrease in the world’s visibie supply of 3,152.000 bushels. Sep.ember wheat openca at from 5734@58c, ad- vanced to 5834¢, closing at 5855@5834c, a_ shade under yesterday. Estimated receipts for to-mor- Tow, 125 cars. CORN—Opening on corn was weak and lower, on account of the influence exerted by the ciosing of the local stock exchange and the finaucial esti- mate of the capitalists already referred to. There was nothing particular about the trade, however, and the feeling soon became more confident. Liv- erpool cables were firm and 14d higher. The amount ou ocean passage increased 960,000 bush- els. Export clearances smounted to 178865 boshels. Bradstreet’s gave an increase in stocks of 1,905,000 bushels. September corn opened from'2415@243/c, advanced to -5%4c, closing at 2514@:514c, Lic higher than yesierday, Est mated receipts for to-morrow, 824 cars. 0ATS—Dispiayed sentiment similar to that pre- vailing in the other markets. ‘I'rade was not heavy enough to admit of any demonstration of either weakness or strength, the market showing a slow and indifferent action. Receipts were 449 cars, and 88.100 bashels were inspected from store. Export ciearances amounted to 76,816 bushels. Bradstreet's reported a decrease in stocks of 268,000 bushels. September oats closed unchanged from yesterday. Esumated receipts for to-morrow, 220 cars. FLAX—Was easy. Cash, Northwestern, 8214c; Southwestern, 7114c; these being the closing prices. September, 7114@7134c; December, 74c. Receipts were 69 cars. PROVISIONS — The story of an anticipated squeeze in September pork by Montreal people had the effect of arousing shorts to a sense of danger this morning, and their purchases, with those made for the account of Armour, advanced prices in this market q uite sharply. The strength continued all through the session, punctuated by flurries and scrambies to buy. A: the close Sep- tembver pork was 90c higher, September lard bc to T14e higher, September ribs 10c to 1214¢ higher. BUTTER—Firm, with desirable siock very scarce.
