14 THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, FRIDAY, JUNE 5, 1896 M GEN, CONEY WILL THLK FOR A WEEK Populist State Committee Arranges an Itinerary For Him. THE NEWS FROM OREGON Leaders of the Party Find New Winds in Their Sails and Are Glad. ARE ANXIOUS ABOUT QUINN. Gossip Ab-ut the Oregon Campaign and the Affairs of the Party in This State. General Coxey did much talking yester- day with the California Populist leaders who compose the State Executive Com- mittee, and one result of it is that Coxey | will put in a week stumping the State for the cause from San Diego to Red Bluff. Then he will hurry East to fulfill engage- ments in Kuns The arrangements as made, subject to telegraphic acceptance in towns named, were that Coxey should speak at San Diego Saturday evening, in Los Angeles Monday, Fresno Wednesday, Red Bluff ursd San Francisco Fridgy and Sac- ramento Saturday. The executive committe held a final session yesteruay forenoon, but its chief feature was a discussion ¥ith Coxey, and it adjourned to the call of the chair. In the evening T. V. Cator arrived from Oregon, having stopped at Red Bluff fo spe ak night before last. Cator, Chairman Wardeil and others met Coxey at ‘the Baldwin in the ev g. Mr. Cator was also fresh from the Oregon campaign and its history, results and lessons were dis- cussed in detail. The Populists are much elated at tie figure they have cut in the first of the ate elect'ons. They regard itas both a \ge, showing the rise of a Populist ti nd as a force tuat will boom and popular: | ize the Populist cause n this and other States. | The Populist leaders here did not light cigars, finger watchchains stretched across rounded vest-fronts and make smiles that barmon d with a well: med business appearance in discu. the gratifvi 1z news, as is apt to be the popular concep- tion of State political leaders in h an hour. The biggest men in the Populist State executive com:niltee present a sen- sible bushiness of locks and whiskers, a sensible plainness and ireedom of fit in habiliments and a sensible direction of speech in what they say. The political reporter meets bland liar: clever evaders of the things that are, skill- ful decorators of the truth and ¢loguent and cordiai historians of the imaginative world in all political circles but the Popu- list. Of course a term of power would give » People’s Darty these political advan- tages, but not yet has the smooth politi- cian’s guile marred the honest sim plicity of Populist politics. The average Populist leader telis just what he thinks or what i i else keeps his mouth shut, either Iy of awkwardly. So it wes a sort of ¢rim and quiet sati faction rather than jollity that lighted a little yesterday the :erious determination and sensible reflectiveness that largely crea the ion one .ets of the big | men of the Poruiist party. They satina | room at the Ru-s Houss, on trunks and in | chairs about down-town hotel lobbies and | in poked-away offices, und paused about | the sidewalks, as the prospects of campaign | work and the effect of the news from Ore- | gon were recounted. | They were ali familiar h the inside of | thie Oregon campaign, and one might learn | from am them more about it than is | given in legrams. It was said that | in some places they were jubbed by the old trick of ballots with some wrong names on them. There was also among them an especial i hout Quinn, one of the two Con- cardidates. The probabilities or ¥ gres: of his election were variously reported in | the teleg hic news yesterday, though Vanderburg’s election was conceded. Both are enough Populists, but Vander- burg is a business man_and not éspecially | a party hero. But Quinn seemed close to | thie hearts of several big California Popu- | lists. - ‘I'hey suy tuat he is proprietor of a | weekly Populist paper, which he edits at night breause be drives a laundry wagon i me. He is described as a man cation, an old ond untiring | rker in the cause, a man in whom the | party has confidence and one “who gets | close to the hearts oi the people.”” Vanderburg’s vote is worth just as much as Quinn’s in Congress, but they do | want lo see Quinn get there. Then one | may hear. too, sub-rosa intimatious that Populist leaders themselves knifed Quinn and tie candl.ate for t e judgeship to Some extent up there by trading them for sers of the Legistature. ard the result in Oregon as a Populist victory,”’ was the way Chairman E. M. Wardall spoke in the afternoon. *‘It | will naturally have its good effect in this State. It will be wind in our sails. Be- sides the Congressmen we have elected a larze share of the county officers through- out the State. “Another thing that we look to is tke chance of our electing a United States Senator. The Republicans have a large majority in_joint ballot, but the Republi- cans are split between Dolph and Mitchell, 1 as they were at one session of the Leg-| islature, whon an adjournment was taken without electing anybody. “The split_is now worse than Jast time, and the factions are more irreconcilable. We exvpect to have about thirty members of the Legislature, which has 90 votes in joint baliot. There are ten Democrats. fthe Populists and Democrats combine on a mun, it would tzke very few free-stiver Republican voies to elect nim. The Re- publicans can’t elect a Senator, and the claunce for ihe Po?uhsu is good.” Secretary R. E. .Bush spoke of Coxey. “We rather liked him,” hesaid. “We rather liked the way he went into the Orezon campaizn in spite of the State committee, which finaily recognized him but as an intruder. We could not keep recognizing him as an earnest Populist. He s honest. He has some fads, but they are not dangerous.’’ “He is really a level-headed fellow,” put in C. H. Johnson. “There is a popa- Jar impre-=sion here that he is associated with ‘sandlotters,” and' there is a pre- judice against him, but he is ot that sort of » man. Heis a r-putable and thorough business man at home, where he runs a white stone guarry.” X “The news from Oregon has encouraged us greatly,” Mr. Bush proceeded, “and we | find our prospects in this State brighten- | ing rapidly. “We are into shape. | etting our campaign plans We Lave an executive com- mittee of fifteen this year. Last time it numbered three. We will have more elaborate business methods. Two years ago we started the State ‘(:umy.-i;;:n with $75 and no money promised. Now we have $6000 pledged, and we will bhave $10,000. 2 “'We are forming a well-organized ma- | C Heath, Cal rdered county assessments amounting to 30 cents for yench Webster vote. The county assessments range trom $2 in_Al- pine and $10 in Mono to $1290 in San Fran- isco.”” & The Populists are already certain that McGlashan will go to Congress from the Second District. From throughout the State reports are being received from farm- ers, miners and business men who tell how their neichbors are talking politics, and thus are expectations builded. The State committee will open down- town headquarters right away and will not go out to the loeal party’s pavilion by the City Hall. The local committee has changed its pavilion plans and will not bave a corrugated iron structure with a tent roof, as at first planned.” They have found a big circus tent at a bargain and it will be pitched on the lot leased. A can- vas addition will be added and_seats for between 4000 and 5000 people will be ar- ranged in ampbitheater stvle. INSULTING PEOPLE. A Ghng of Boys Arrested at Hermann and Webster Streets. Property-owners and residents in the vicinity of Webster and Herrman streets have been complaining to the police of a gang of young men who nightly congre- gate on the street corners and insult passers-by, especially ladies. So intolerable had the nuisance become that occupants of houses had notified the owners that unless it was abated they would be compelied to remove from the neighborhood. 3 Last night Lieutenant Burke detailed Policemen Fontana and Kemm in plain clothes to investigate, and they arrested six young men snd booked them at the Seventeenth-street station for disturbing the peace. Their names are Theodore Witts, 17 vears of age; Douglas Willis, 17; Edward Cross, 17; John lficCaflerly, 18; Frank rassna, 16; and Frank Panel, 17.
