12 THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL, MONDAY, MARCH 30, 1896. FEAST OF THE PASSOVER, First Day’s Service and Celebra- tion at the Bush-Street Temple. The Edifice Was Beautifully Decorated With Flowers and Appropriate Emblems. The first day of the feast of the Passover was celebrated by the Congregation Ohabai | Shalome in the Bush-street Temple by two | services yesterday. The morning service | ‘was most impressive, and the interior of | _ the edifice was beantifully decorated with | flowers and emblems symbolic of the de- | Jiverance of the Israelites out of bondage. | Dr. Fryer's sermon was most appropriate to the occasion, and an unusually attract- [ ive musical programme was rendered. The evening service, called the Sadr] night, was an innovation in this part of | the country, and was held in the large | Jecture-room of the temple. Tables were | spread with a feast of good tbi and the | school children of the temple partook of them while listening to stories of the Jew- | ish people in Egypt. A choir composed of | young people of the temple rendered selec- tions from appropriate musical composi- ’ tions during intermissions. | When the feast was aimost finished Dr. | Fryer read selections from the Scrintures, and after each verse the children re-} sponded in concert with & refrain pre- | viously committed to memo: | be arrangement of the lecture-room for e was most pleasing. The lec- ture platform wasa ma-s of flowers and the walls of the room were hung with gar- lands. The two tables were long enough to seat about fifty children each and were decorated with light-colored blossoms. | The ladies of the temple wai children and saw t al attended to. The cf re h delighted at the novelty of participati the service, and with their bright facesand pretty costumes formed a pleasing picture. The feast of the Passover is a feast of gladness and pleasure, although filled with solemnity when giving thanks to the Cre- ator for the blessings of liberty. It is these features that make the celebration so full of interest and give it an aspect that be appreciated by the children. is morning at 10 o'clock Dr. Fryer, g at T by special request, will preach a sermonin German. An excellent musical pro- gramme is prom‘sed that will be under | the direction of Cantor Meyerson. JONOUIN'S STAGE DEBUT, It Was Made Just a Quarter of a | Century Ago at Dietz’s Opera-House. | country. The Occasion Was a Benefit Tendered,? to the Veteran Editor, Calvin 13 B. MacDonald. OAKLAND, CaL., March 29.—Calvin B. | MacDonald has written an article in his | paper this week that tells of Joaquin Mil- ler's debut on the stage. It is exactly a | quarter of a century since the hermit | poet of Fruitvale appeared at Dietz's | Opera-house. | ““Oaklund was then, in 1871, only a large | village,” says Mr. MacDonald, “*but it con- tained some people of large intellectual | stature and considerable financial conse- | quence—Durant, Felton, Tompkins, Ross | Browne, the Le Contes, Shattuck, Pardee, Morse, Ur. Hamilton, Walsworth, Mrs. M. K. Blake, and others of much note. | Although there were only sight or ten thousand inhabitants when, through the personal influence of Mrs. Blake, I was riven & complimentary benefit at Brayton 1all, now 1ietz's Opera-house, there was an audience of 1100, each with half a dollar and not one deadbead. Mrs. Blake, the manager, made all the clergymen, profes- | sors aud newspaper men come down with the aust, and I mysel, the beneticiary, had | to pay half a dollar to getin. Nextday I | was rich 8s a Jew, with nearly $500. That incident was reported in the st, and opened to me the most eminent situation | in the Middie West. That was what the | powerfuliy executive Mrs. Blake did for me, and 1t was by no means the last of her | good wor “That was the occasion cof Joaquin | Miller's first appearanceon the stage. He | was our star periormer, and a_y liter- ary lion with an unbounded popularity whom the rich ladies used to come in their carriages and take away to dinner and to | hear his poems. Mr. Miller deserved all | the friendly attentions and admiration he | obtained in the then town of Oakland @nd afterward in the great world's capital, Londen. He is one of the true American | poets who, as such, will survive. i hope | he may long continue to illuminate the romantic eminence where be has made | his home; where indue time he may be | honorably cremated and have bis ashes | inurned in democratic terra cotta and planted in full view of the shininz gate that opens out to the great South Sea.” cimat s S MAEES A RECORD. Edgren Succeeds in Throwing the Ham- mer One Foot Further Than His Previous Be: ? Effort. OAKLAND, Carn., March 29.—Robert | Edgren, the champion bammer thrower of tbe U. C. team, has made a new record for himself and is now confident thai he is good for the world’s record. Yesterday while at practice he put the hammer i43feet. The distance was care- fully measured and he is much elated over his success. In talking of the matter to- night he said: “I go East in about six weeks, when I expect to brezk my own record in the hammer throw. I get the swing every once in a while that makes the hammer fly.” # Only a short time ago he threw the ham- mer 147 feet, but he now declares that he will make thata small affair in the near future. Edgren is au artist of considerable ability and is studying in the art school in Ban Frauncisco. —— A Bicycle Parade. ALAMEDA, Cav., March A big bi- cycle parate is to be given in this city early in May under the direction of the Alameda cyclers. Captain V. A. Dodd is making the arrangements. Alameda has the best streets in California jor bicycling, and it is believed that there are no better in the world, but heretofore there has been no public: demonstration on the part of the bicyclists in recognition of that fact. It is expected that all the bicycle clubs of San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose, Sac- | ramento, Stockton and other cities will send large delegations, and there are hun- dreds of bicyclists in Alameda who will take part in the parade. Alameda will this year have the finish of the relay races. Coming into this eity from the San Leandro road at High street the cyclers will go down Central avenue and finish at a point near Morton street. S A Ay Just for Fun. ALAMEDA, CAL., March 29. —C. H.| Wilson, colored, who was charged with | the theft of a watch and chain from Emma Moore, also colored, of 2017 San Antonio avenue, was found guilty vesterday after- noon by Justice Morris and sentenced to serve in the county jail for thirty days. He admitted having taken the watch, but declared it was for the purpose of getting # joke on the owner and not with any in- tent to steal. The Justice seemed to be unappreciative of jokes of this kind and ANNUAL MEE | B2 aohoal | meeting of stockhoiders of 80 imposed the sentence as stated. | dress C.
