CHICAGO, Iry, Jan. 2.—The second day of the year sustained 1ts reputation for being a good day on which t0 sell wheat, the market opening weak and’ lower and dechning further, influenced par- the Cinciunati Price Current, which reported the growing plant protected by snow. and also _affe ted by Bradstreet's report of Tuesday, which was not received until that day’s session was over. It was t0o soon efier .a hohday to ex- pect that trading would assume large proporiions, most of the business to-day consisting of scalping and local operations. Liverpool cables were quiet and unchanged. Receipts at Chicago were $4 cars, and 49,500 bushels were taken from store. Northwestern receipts have been steadily drop- off 0f late and the bulls are deriving consola- om the fact. To-day there were 421 cars, rep- ing two days’ arnvals, against 1260 for a sim. ilar period la cek. Liverpool stocks showed a dy of 525,000 bushbels for the past month. nial markets were irregular. Export clear- ances for two days were fair at 556,000 bushels. he market rallied from its early weak position, toward e close reacted and declined again. wheat opened from 5914c to 691/gc, sold be- tween 393uc and bSihe, closing at 5864@583%, 1@13/gc under Tuesday. Estimated receipts for to- morrow 125 cars. CORN—Corn was rather slow, 'vith an Inclination to foilow the finer grain market. The routine news Wwas not particularly vorable, however, receipts being fairly large at 324 cars and Liverpool cables quiet and 14d Jower. Withdrawals from store were light at 2531 bushels. Export clearances for two days amounted to 327,426 bushels. May corn opened ai 25@28Yac. sold between 28lge and 27740, closing at 277@28c, Y4c_under E: niaed receipts for (o-morrowx 380 cars. TS—The market for oats was little more than nominai. The usual spasmodic trading took place, but it was unimportant. Receipts were 169 cars and 15,000 bushels were taken from store. The tone was quite steady, considering the surrounding weakness. May oats closed lg@lic lower. Esti- mated receipts for to-morrow 245 cars. FLAX—Was easv. Cash, 91@91%4¢; May, 95@ 9515, s 75 cars. PROV —Opened with a strong tone and (8 materially higher than they closed on Tuesday, but | the lack of orders permittéd a portion of the gain 1o be lost. A steady hog market and a light run of the animal at the yards contributed to the better feeling in product at the opening. Renewed buying late in the session resulted in a firm feeling anadvance over the previous high quotations. - pork closed 20c higher, May lard 714@10¢ and May ribs 10c higher. The episode of Wei-hai-wei deserves a passing notice. On the 3lst of Janua the Japanese carried all the Eastern Chi- nese forts on the mainland, and as the at- tempts of the Chinese to blow up the bat- teries or to disable the guns had been only partially successful, the majority of the guns were serviceable, and, the forts being manned by seamen gunmers from the fleet, the guns were quickly turned on the Chi, nese ships and the batteries on the island- Seeing this, the Ting Yuen got under way that afternoon, and, taking vp a position 8o as partially to enfilade them, she at- tacked two of the forts armed with twenty- one and twenty-four 6-inch Krupp guns, The attempt was gallantlv made, and one #un at least haa its muzzle shot off by the ironclad’s gunners; but an inspection of the fort—a fine modern one built under Vor Hannekan’s superintendence — showed the practical invulnerability of modern sea forts against naval attack, though possibly they might be temporarily silenced’ by a storm of projectiles from quick-firiug and machine guns.—Vice-Ad- miral Fremantle, in the January Forum. ——————— A deeper spot in the ocean than an: yet known has been found recently by H. M. survering ship Penquin, in latitude 23 deg. 40 min. 8., longitude 175 deg. 10 min.
