CHICAGO MARKETS, . ell, CHICAGO, Tr1., Dec. 20.—A panicky stock mar- ket at New York, with London throwing overboard American securities and the newspapers filled with war talk. were more than the wheat market could stand up agemst this morning. The immediate opening was with a Dnervous feeling and with the crowd selling freely, so that prices from the very start were wealk and lower. Subsequently the trad- ing settled into dullness, but prices remained ina state of weakness. The Liverpool wheat market was quotably steady at a decline of 144 for futures, which did not indicate any fear of a scarcity of grain supplies at t place. receipts at Chicago were 181 cars and 23 816 bushels were taken from tore. Northwest arrivals were 723 cars, ugainst t Friday and 271 a year ago. Export clear- 970 ances at Atlantic ports were 90,485 bushels. About the middle of the session u second alarm was sounded, and prices dropped a fuil cent from the low point established at the opening. Dun & Co. in their weekly review of trade w! to-morrow Failures for two weeks of December show liabili- tles of $6,510,451, against 86,840,401 last year and £11,679,996 for the same weeks of 1893. Failures for the week have been 577 in the United States, against 349 last year and 32 in Canada against 36 last year. The strong Americanism of the President’s mes- sage has given its character to the week. Popular feeling was profoundly moved, but excepting in stock and cotton markets business was remark- nll and scarcely affected. Seliing of securities held abroad a natural first_impuise, though the sellers are not unlikely intime to discover that no other securities are safer from international complications than the American, Z Cotlon has deciined 4c, and wheat about 2 cents. The markets in this country do not act upon the theory that any interruption of foreign relations is to be expected. Coming at a time when nearly all produce markets are inactive and industries unvsualy dull, the disturbance has affected values much less than might have been expected. Not because of any forelzn question, but solely because of influences which have been in continu- ous operation for months. prices of manufactured goods continued to decline. There is no great Change in boots and shoes, thougb gradually lower prices are offered. Leather still declines, thongh ides at Chicago are scarce and stronger. Prices of iron and steel have fallen about 3 per cent for the week, and are now 3 per cent below their max- imum. Bessemer pig and gray forge and most Kinds of finished products having yielded more or less. Purchases by the great steel companies, it is now evident, were much in excess of their actual con- sumption, and 1t is believed that some furnaces Totals will have to suspend production. as the demand sor manufactured products is too smail to support the output, estimated for the year at 1839 tons by the Pittsburg American Manufacturer. Minor metals are weaker. ‘There is 1o change of importance in the market for foreign goods, which is not active enough to prevent some accumulation. Print cloths are a shade weaker. The market for woolen goods has not improved. Sales of wool are malnly confined to immediate needs of manufacturers, who are buying but little ahead. The imporis of woolen goods continue very large, though smaller than a month ago. It sounds strange to hear the many compiaints of slow collections and scarcity of money at the West, on account of the tardy movement of products {rom the farms, when Western wheat re- ceipts in three weeks have been 18,615,498 bushels, against 9,437,324 last year, while Atlantic ex- ports, flour included, are only 5,812,337, agaiust 6,453,100 last year. Grain is 50 low that a free movement cannot_be .exvected, and vet the receipts are so large that the crop remaining behind must exceed ordinary estimates. The movement In cotton continues comparatively small, but_estimates of consump- tion here and abroad begin to take the place in a measure of estimates of vield, as markets for #0ods are generally dull. There' was a shade of advance in price until forelgn quotations disturbed the market, but it closed with a 34c decline. The stock market went gll o pieces on Friday and closed $3 per share lowet than a week ago for railroads and $3 25 per share for trusts. On Fri- day alone the four more prominent railroad stocks fell an_average of $6 62 per share, ana the five more prominent trusts 83 87 per share, much of the selling being of securities largely beld abroad.
