W. H. HaMMON, Forecast Official. NEW YORK MAREKETS. NEW YORK, N. Y., Oct. 1.—Speculation at the Stock Exchauge was quiet agam to day, but the tendency of prices was upward. After a period of hesitancy at the opening, prices moved up briskly in the case 0 Anthracite Coalers on the reiteration of the old reports of a combination of the compa- nies for the better maintenauce of rates and for the regulation of the ou eady advance in the price of the product of gthens the be- lief of an early consummation of the deal, and it is stimnlating purchases of the stocks. To-day Lack- swanna jumped 410 174; Delaware and Hudson, 1to 134;: Jersey Central, 134 to 11434, and Read- ing 1 to 22. Subsequently Keading ran off 2155. The general list moved up in sympat although the indc nfiuenced by special causes. In the case of Sugar, whic proved trade conditions were cited as the cause for the advance. Chicago Gas gained nearly 2 per cent, 10 703, which was due t0 reports that_the new owners were making good progress in their work of reorganization of the property in line with the laws- of Illinois. The oflicial confirmation ot the settiement of the Distilling and Cattle-feeding troubles which reached here by way of Chicago brought'about a rally to 247 in that stock. To- bacco jumped 215 to 10134@100 on reports that negotiations were progressing for a settlement of the fight with the outside manufacturers. A re- duction {n the posted rates of sterling exchange of 1a¢ to $4 87Ya@4 8815 during the afternoon started up a fresh demand from the shorts. It has been fashionable of late to sell the market on the theory that heavy gold exports were imminent. To-day’s reduction in rates, however, which was due to an increase in the supply of cotton bills, has caused a change in sentiment 30 far as gold ship- mets are concerned and the bears were endeavor- ing to take back their contracts all day.
