10 SUNDAY REST IS NEEDFUL, Workingmen Should Endeavor to Secure Sabbath Ob- servance. Archbishop Riordan’s Sermon. Sunday a Day for Mass and Not for Parties. Archbishop Riordan delivered a sermon at St. Mary’s Cathedral yesterday morning upon Sunday observance. Taking the third commandment, “Six days shalt thou labor,” as the foundation for his remarks, he expanded upon the re- ligious and physical advisability of devot- ing one day out of the seven to absolute rest. “The Sabbath of Christians is a mis- nomer,” said the Archbishop, “and it ex- | ists no more. By special enactment and observance of the early church the first day of the week was called the Lord’s day. Sunday is not the Sabbath. “The church did not first command the observance of the Sabbath;.it was com- manded before the church existed; for did not the Lord s ‘Remember thou keep holy the Sabbath day’? “From the very beginning the character of this day has always been twofold—a day of rest and cessation from labor and a day of religious observance. It is a day of physical recreation, and it is a day of spiritual devotion also. SR “The hearing of mass on Sunday is im- portant and we cannot avoid it _or neglect it without incurring the great displeasure of the church. It isoneof the mostim- portant observances of the Sabbath day. As the priest raises the chalice and pray to God for the forgiveness of the sins of the people in meditation we prostrate our- selves before the meek and gentle Savior him to forgive us and to restore us to a spiritual life.” Continuing his discourse, Archbishop Riordan said that not long ago he was talking in another city with the manager of a horsecar corporation, who told him that it necessary to give the horses a certain amount of rest once a week, but | when the Archbishop asked how much rest he gave the men whodrove the horses, the reply came that it is easy to get men nowa(fiws. but that horses die off if no properly cared for, and they cost money. “Let there be,” said Archbishop Rior- dan, “in this weary march through the desert of life some pleasant spots in our ! journey. Let it be that when Sund: Ccomes man shall feel that there is one. day on which he is a free man, unhampered by the rules of his employer. Let people work less, that all may have a chance to do some work. “Thousands even here are compelled tn work on Sunday, not by any fault of theirs, but by the severit™ of competition. “We Christians, many of us, allow our selves to become negligent of the observ: ance of Sunday. It is our duty to rest on the Sabbath, and we ought not to make it impossible for those in our employ to have | the same opportunity. “While the church condemns Sunday picnics connected with riotous living and dissipation, it does not condemn legitimate recreation. Sunday is not a day for great parties, afternoon parties, dinner parties | and theater parties. It is a day of spiritual observance and of hame gatherings. “Religion after all is an element fostered | more in the family than in the school or | in the church. The model father spends his evenings in the sacred precincts of his own home with his family, and not, as is too often the case with rich men, at clubs, | and poor men in saloons. “The workingmen of the land should be the first leaders in a demand for this day of rest. *‘Fof a nation to be strong the men must be vigorous. The workingmen should be the foremost observers of the Sabbath. and was given to you by divine law. Be- sides this holy law we have the experience | of all ages to show that in_order to live | properly man requires one day’s rest out | of seven.” DIAMOND TENNIS TROPHY. Bliven Defeats O’Brien and Both Now Lack But One of Owner- ship. The third of this year’s quarterly tennis tournaments for the Hammersmith dia- mond trophy was played on the Olympic courts yesterday. Ralph Bliven, until recently a student at Stanford University, won the tourna- ment and secured possession of the trophy for the next three months. In the preliminaries of the trophy tour- mament Stephens defaulted to O'Brien; | lliott . 6—4; Ru- dolph dafaulted to Bliven; Moulder lost to Roma beat Greenlee, 6—1, 6—8,6—3; won from Brooke, 12—10, 6— Humphreys, 8—6,6—0; Harrigan defaulted toCleary and Cleary defeated Punnett, 6—4, | 6—3. in the semi-finals O’Brien defeated | Roma, 6—0, 6—2; Bliven won from Elliott, 6—0, 6—4; Punnett beat Humphreys, 8—6, 6—2. The finals were between Bliven and Pun- nett and were captured by Bliven in spite of the handicap he conceded. The score in games was 6—3, 6—3. In the consolation tournament O'Brien | defaulted to Cleary, Eliiot defaulted to | Moulder and Greenlee defaulted to Hum- | phreys. Humphreys ana Moulder met and Humphreys won, 6—4, 6—0. Brooke lost one set to Cleary, the games standing 7—>5, and then conceded him the match. DR. BROWN'S SFRMON. He Takes for His Theme, ‘“ Ships That Pass in the Night.” Dr. C. 0. Brown aiscoursed last night on “Ships That Passin the ) text was taken from Job, ix:26, “They are passed away as the swift ships.” The joys and sorrows that might have been, but never were; the opportunities that came near and passed, while people were unconscious of them; the disasters which have only been a hair breadth off, and yet which passed to one side without revealing their presence—these were the “ships that pass in the night’’ of which he spoke.
