As dealers have generally laid in fair supplies business has sgain become dull. but holders are firm and feel hopeful of a further improvement in yiew of the probability of light receipts during the balance of the season. Costa Ricas have also sold freely but without change in_prices. Guatemalas, on the other hand, have attricted little attention, espe- cially for the better grades, and are rather easy at our quotations. There have been no sales for ship- ment overland since the 7th. To-day’s first-hand stock consists of 4066 bags Costa Rica, 149 Nicara- gua, 7751 Salvador, 24,859 Guatemala—in all 3 825 bags,. CHICAGO MARKETS. CHICAGO, T11., May 18.—Wheat—Almost every commission man and speculator of experience ad- vised their customers and told their friends before the market opened that the inevitable break in the wheat market would be realized to-day. How much they were mistaken they began to realize when, after a decline of 3/5c per bushel as the re- sult of all the efforts of the local talent bunched together on the selling side, the price was gambol- ing around 72%4c per bushel for July about half an hour from the close. That was quite a contrast with 68%4c, although some few sales were made . Dear the opening. July started with sellers at 70c but no buyers until it had been oftered down to 6834c, and In some instances as low as 69%6¢. I¢ recovered gradually to 7034c, but for an hour and & half there was enough wheat on sale at anything. | When, however, heavy frosts were predicted for South Dakota, Texas, Kansas and Missourl, threat- ening the destruction of corn, which is now prom- ising, the price of corn began to shoot skyward, which could not longer be controlled, and jumped for sbont hait an hourlike s pea o s hot stove, It rose to 7334c, dropped in about fifteen minutes 0 70%c, T e v 724c and closed. with bags ersat 1134c. The ordinary market news was not much hecded apart from w/hat referred to the re- rted damage to the ng crop. P orn staried weak, bat it did not stay tn that con- dition very long. July opened st 518c and sold from that down to 511/4c near the beginaing of the svssion, and for a timé floundered in & lany way at aronnd 5134c. Soon that was changed entirely and it went shooting about like the shuttle of & sewing-machine. With a bound it went 0 5534 back again o 5234 and np once more to 63%4c all in about ten minutes. The latest trading was at 53%4c. Oats were activeand secured a heavy business Frost scare, good buying by shorts and the influ- ence of wheat and corn all helped in advancing values. June startea at 285/c, sold at 2835@28%ac, advanced to 2634c and closed at 29%sc. Septem- ber ranged from 26%o to 28%c and closed at 3/ bid. Tbe provision market was steady near tho begla: ning owing to the hog receipts being moderate. It became quite strong when the corn market showed the way in such excited fashion, and to the ad- vance in thai article is 10 be ascribed a gain for g.hu day of 325c¢ in pork, 1234c inlard and 16c in 5.
