Chicago has taken all the fat Nevada cattle, 8o the Meat market s better shape than for several years. Dealers expect better times in stock from now op. Most stocks sold down, espe- cially at the close, though several touched the highest prices forsome time, viz.: Con. Cal & Va. $3 85, Ophir §1 95 and Sierra Nevads 95c. "The lntter part of the week, particularly Friday, was active, the improvement being due to & better outlook on the Comstock. The Con. Cal. & Va. carries over $52,985 into April, with all of the monthly expenses for March fully paid. A tele- gram from Superintendent Lyman of the mine says that during the past week 109 tons of ore had been extracted of ai assay viiue of 85387 per ion, ‘which shows & pronounced improyement, being, in fact, an increase of §20 10 over the previous weck’s assay. It is expected that the output this week will be considerably larger than that of last, as they are stoping again, and it is the intention’ to start up the Morgan mill at an early date. NoTES. Sales of mining stocks at the regular sessions of the San Francisco Stock Board for the week were 68,220 shares. “The assessment on the Crown Point will be de- Iinguent in office on Tuesday. From the opening which was started from the drift run south from the end of the east crosscut from the main north lateral drift on the sill floor of this level, carried up 43 feet, a north drift started on the fourth Koor has been run 10 feet 1n low-grade ore, From these openings we have extracted 12 tons of ore, assaying $37 29 per ton. 1750 level—From the end of the east crosscut started from the end of the drift running south from the south end of the stope on the fourth floor above the sill fioor on this level a north drift has been advanced 20 feet, all the way in solid ore. It is 6 feet in width at the mouth and widening to 7 feet in the face. The to and the bottom of the drift are in good ore an¢ the face is ail in ore averaging $90 per ton. We have extracted from this locnll(g during the week 97 tons of ore, assaying $55 90 per ton. We are cutting out on the west side of the south drift on the sili floor of this level at a Fol'nb 15 feet north from the incline winze sunk rom the 1700 level and will extend the drift southward from that point. The total ore ex- tracted during the week from all points was 109 tons, the assay value of which was, per mine car samples, 87 j’“ ton. OPHIR—1460 level—The drift running north from the top of the upraise which was carried up 80 feet above the sill floor of this level from a point in the east crosscut from the main north lateral drift has been extended 14 feet, total leng\m 258 feet; face in porphyry and'quartz of low assay value. We have con- tinued jointly with the Mexican Company the work of making repairs in the main sha from the 1100 level upward. Central Tunnel—250 level—Northeast drift 3 running from the southeast drift at apoint 125 feet in from its mouth has been extended 20 feet, total length 132 feet, in a clay and porphyry formation with an increased flow of water from the face. ‘Tunnel level—The old crosscut running west from the end of the drift run north from the end of the west crosscut from the north-drift from the Mexican shaft has been reopened 56 feet, total length 72 feet, in low- e quartz. The Eskimo in his “kaiak” is indeed great, for he faces the roughest seas, dodges the heavy waves, and some of the more expert ‘‘kaiak” men receive a heavy roller by capsizing and receiving the blow on the bottom, righting themselves aiter- ward. The skillful fisher rights himself with the paddle, which is two-bladed, or with his open hand, while some can do it with the clenched hand. *“I have seen,’” says Nansent, “a man take a stone in his clenched hand before capsizing, and come up with it still in his hand.”’” Normust we forget that he has to tow his ?rey besides erformin(i some of these feats, and a unter will sometimes bring three or more seals to land safely. E His chief weapon is the harpoon, which he throws either with his hand or the in- 5enious throwing-stock: it has an easily etachable head with a line and bladder attached. Besides these he has lances and bird, darts, all being kept in readiness under loops of leather on top of his ‘ka- jak.” Surely he must be cool and daring, tor he must not missa wounded and en- raged seal, nor must the slightest hitch occur in the line when the prey rushes away with tMe bharpoon. The greatest achievement in the hunter’s art was to be able to dispense with bladders, and to let the seal tow the ‘‘kaiak” man by his waist. —The Spectator. . ————— The Devil’s Wife. A correspondent supplies an ingenious answer to the question, “Who is the dev- il’'s wife?” thus: *‘The devil is the father of lying. Lying is invention. Necessity is the mother of infention. Necessity is therefore the devil's wife.”—Philadelphia Press. e —————— A Philadelphia scholar says parrots speak in pollysyllables. THE CALL CALENDAR. Arrr, 1895.
