Silver fell back acent or so and this had more or less-influence on the market, A substantial rise In silver would work wonders in the silver mines, and it is the opinion of well- posted men that such a rise is bound to come sooner or later, and may perbaps strike us betore we know it is coming. NOTES. Considerable talk is heard of starting up the Mount Diablo and other mines at Candelaria, and if silver strikes 70c or better, they will probably resume operations. 1t is reported that the Bodie mine will start up at an early date. ‘The annnal meeting of the Live Oak Drift Gravel Mining Company has been called for the 15th. In the Occidental the north drift from the west crosscut 500 level is now in b4 feet, advanced 7 feet, and continues In ore of fair quality. WINE OB MINERAL WATER, Some Temperance People Object to Be- ing Charged for ‘‘ Drink.’” “We have stopped charging guests the item ‘wine and liquors’ on the bill,” said a hotel clerk. ‘“‘Formerly everything a cus- tomer had to drink was put down under that head, but we got into trouble through it and we have changed our methods. ‘A temperance lecturer, a woman, stopped here not long ago. Sheran up an enormous bill for mineral waters, and when her hus- band, who came from Chicago to take her West, found the item ‘wines and liquors, $38 15," on the bill he kicked up a terrible row, thinking that she had n on a colossal spree in his absence. They had a heated debate, and it required the produc- tion of the liquor cards to satisfy him of her innocence. ‘‘After she had argued it out with him she descended upon us like an avalanche, and threatened to have us all arrested for libel. Since then, we have put on bills simply ‘mineral waters.’ ‘“‘Some guests don’t understand the item. A man will come and tell us that he drank sixty-three cocktails, but that he had no mineral waters and want to_know why he is cha;ged with uomenhinti he don’t drink.
