The ministers who offered prayer at ihe opening of each day's session of the last legislature have been paid at the rate of $5 a prayer. This is what each member of the legislature got per day, and asthe preachers did no injury at least to the state, the money allowed them was better bestowed than on soine of the mem bers, Miss Hattie Brown, the historian and prophetess of the high school class of '98, judging from the com- pliments of those who heard her, crowned herself with honor. Steward, P. E. of the Paducah dis- trict, All friends and members in- vited to be present. It is said that life is long enough for love but too brief for friendship. One of the most beautiful pictures of friendship it has ever been our lot to chronicle, was produced last week the next day perhaps, after the com- mencement exercises. The chief actor, or actress, for it was a young lady, had at the graduating exercises, |been made the recipient of an im- mense lot of flowers and a beautiful Oxford Teacher's Bible, on the back of which her name is printed in gold. The next day, true to the inborn emotions of an undying friendship, of the dead, with tender, benevolent hands laid the lowers on the mound that marked the last resting place of the late Rev. George W. Dupee. O! give an explanation for bis conduct yesterday evening, as side by side he and she rode south on Seventh street, At the annual sermon last Sunday, to the Daughters and Knights of Tabor $33.67 were raised, The ser- mon, which was by Rev. Hawkins, was to an audience such as is rarely seen, Hardly more than two-thirds of the people could gain admission to the big anditorium of the Wasbiog- ton street church. And the sermon was an effort well worthy the auspi- cious occasion. Rev. W.S, Baker also preached to the Lilly of the West Tabernacle, of the same order, at Burks’ chapel, A. M.
