Few believe that it is prepar- ing to attack the fleet of Commodore Schley. On the contrary the belief is it has started on its return to Spain 1,600 miles distant from Cape Verde, thus indicating a purpose to await an engagement in their own waters. It is likely that in this event the first port will be made at the Canary islands, distant about 525 miles from St. Viacent and a Spanish possession, partially fortified and a fair base.
