N Part Two EDITORIAL SECTION Pages Eleven to Twenty \ VOL. XLV—NO. 313. HUMANE SOCIETY GETS NEW START Money is Raised by Prominent Women So An Officer May Be Hired. ENLIST AID OF ALL DRIVERS The Humane society is entering on a new lease of life, due largely to the efforts of Mrs. J. DeForest Rich- ards and Miss Jessie Millard. In the last week the two well-known women collected $1,175 to carry on the work of the society. J. F. Wheeler, an old horseman, has been employed by the society as a special humane officer. He will investigate cases of cruelty to ani- ~~*male, will look after the proper har- nessing of horses and otherwise see to the enforcement of the city ordi- nance. A conference with Chief Dunn, Commissioner Jardine, Mr. Wheeler and the two women from the Humane society was held to plan the work. . A movement will be started to en- list the co-operation of all city driv- ers by securing their membership in the Humane society. It is also planned to engage a girl at the Vis- iting Nurse office in the city hall to answer calls for the humane officer. Among the generous givers to the cause of dumb animals were Mrs. A. C. Smith, Mrs. George A. Joslyn, Mrs. Richards, Miss Millard and Ward Burgess, Louis Nash, Charles H. Brown, Dr. Tilden and the John Decre Plow company, each of whom donated $100, and Isaac W. Carpen- ter, $50. A number of $25 contribu- tions were also received. ( THE OMAHA DAILY BEE MAKES FINE SCHOOL RECORD FOR PUNCTUALITY DORIS L. SCHNEIDER. Doris L. Schneider, Lothrop school girl, holds the public school attend- ance record. She has not been tardy OMAHA, for eight years nor absent for five years. She began her school work at Lothrop and has just been gradu- ated to the high school, where she ex- pects to enter next September. This young exemplar of punctual- ity is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Schneider of 3807 North Twen- ty-second street. To keep her record clear of tardymarks she had to make heroic efforts on several occasions. She adhered to the idea of “Early to bed and early to rise.” Three More Feeds In Prospect for the Ak Hustling Crew Three more big dinners are in sight for Ak-Sar-Ben’s hustling committee for its splendid work this year. Al- ready the committee is credited with bringing in 1,896 of the 2,535. mem- bers there are in the ranks of King Ak at this time. One dinner is soon to be given by Randall Brown, one of the governors who promised the boys a feed if they should get 2,300 members by the opening night. Ev- erett Buckingham has offered the boys another big dinner as soon as they raise the membership to 3,500. Charlie Saunders, another of the gov- ernors, offered to give a big dinner to the boys just on general principles for the good work they had done. The team of Potter, Blackwell and Marwell is in the lead, with 666 mem- bers to its credit. The team of Whit- ney, Benford and Link is second, with 187 members to its credit. The team of A. C. Potter, Low and Wilson is third in line, with 173 members, and the team hustling hard on the South Side—Schellberg, Fry and Cheek— comes next, with 139 members. ‘Don't Hesitate!
