It deals With the work of hunting down and rounding up a set of counterfeiters that is headed by, the craftiest master of that nefarious art. House Peters plays the leading role as “Kestner” and single ‘handed battles against these master criminals.’ A good love story runs through the whole play and takes the edge off of the story of crime. SPECIAL ATTRACTION AT NEW STAR TODAY There will be a special attraction at the New Star when the children of the neighborhood will put on a play. In addition to this there will be a five-reel feature with Florence Law- ‘rence in “Elusive Isabel” and a good comedy. Rube Miller n'i> ears in a_com- edy. Monday the bi lpcllls for Helen Talks with Screen-Struck Girls By BEATRICE MICHELENA—No. 12. (Copyrighted May, 1916, by Beatriz Michelena.) One of the questionsfrequently put to me is about the kind of facial lines and features most likely to succeed in the film world. These queries come from inex- perienced girilies with very nebu- lous aspiration to some day develop into “movie stars,” Were I able to answer them with any degree of decis- iveness, I should immediately be- come a very val- uable source of information for producers with long years of ex- perience in the profession. e A matter technically known as “photographic values” is one of the knottiest problems that motion pic- tyres have to solve. This applies alike to the piece of furniture em- ployed as a property and the face of tt;e actor or actress who makes use of it. The _common adage that “the cam- era will not lie” is a misleading one. More often than not a thing will photograph out of its natural color and light. A very hideous green as an actual coat may give a panellin a richest hue in its photograp! translation. That is why the proper ties of the regular theater will never do for the motion picture stage un- less they are retouched with the painter’s brush. g In a measure this same uncertainty applies to the performer’s features and complextion. No producer can|® be absolutely sure of how well one will photograph until a test is made. It seems that certain lines of the face and shades in one’s complextion, which are scarcely noticeable in actual life, will unaccountably make strongest appeal to the lens of the camera and throw everything else into subordination. At times this works to the per- former’s advantage. At others, how- ever, the camera seems intent on searching out all that is hard and disagreeable in a face. In this respect it often appears to almost get under- neath the skin and open secreted ugli_*: to the light. ere are certain general consid- erations in respect to one’s features, however, that can be pretty well re- lied upon to make ejther for or against good photographic results. I shall discuss some of these in futuré “talks,” but have first gone to this length to have it thoroughly under- stood that there can be nothing hard or fast about what I am going to say. My observations will apply as ten- dencies rather than definite fact, and shall always be open to exceptions.
