BUT MINISTERS ARE SILENT AURORA, Neb, Nov. 20.—(Special)— ‘The Mimisterial assoclation of the city ©of Aurora has been confronted with a rr‘.‘:‘- which bids wel) to create a well det ‘break in religlous circles and whish Has already caused a wave of in- dignation to sweep amopg the citizens hérd, | An evangelist by the name of Kirkland, who is an imitator 4f the style and meth- od# of “Billy” Sunday in his preachings, is the hornet around which the storm cemters. A short time ago, After one of KirKland's sensational sermons, Miss Kathieen G. Hearn, principal of the Atrora High achool, wrote letters to members of the Ministerial assoclation requesting that assoclation to send Kirk- laid from the city on the grounds that | the svangelist “is sowing in the ears of the children the meeds of vileness and wl and under the cloak of re- i ls preaching not Christ, but Kirk- lahd.” Miniaters Are Silent. No ackmowledgment of the letter was made by the Ministerial assoclation and it Is understood no action has been taken Following the composition of the letter the evangelist Is sald to have several times taken occasion to refer indirectly in his public addresses, or at least by inuendo, to Miss Hearn in denunciation. Tt is also asserted that Kirkland has not d the alleged offensive speech and méthods, but has, on the contrary, em- phasised them. Two weeks after Miss Hearn sent her lettér to the ministers a petition was circulated among the business men of Aurora, and it is sald it was signed by practically every man to whom it was presented, This petition asks that the Ministerial association make public a stitement which shall express either ap- proval or disapproval of the views ex- pressed by Kirkland with regard to the character of the high school principal. Citisens Roused. ‘The assoclation continues to remain siient In this matter also. It is known the evangelist when he came to Aurora asked the local clergy to remain silent it they were unable to approve of his d But the degree of forbearance whigh ‘the ministers are maintaining is beyomd' the understanding of the citisens of the éity, Critiolem of Kirkland has been almost general throughout the town.
