FIREBUG ATTEMPTS 0DESTROY CHURCH American Flag Set Ablagze in Incen- diary Attack Made on the First Congregational. SERIES OF DAMAGING ACTIONS Starting of an incendiary fire in the First Congregational church, Nineteenth and Davenport streets, i and the attempted burning of an | " American flag in the church follow- ing a series of petty attacks on thll| and other houses of worship In Omaha, made by unidentified per- o ‘ sons, are causing great alarm to pas- 3 tors and congregations in Omaha, Churchmen believe the attacks are of serfous mature and afe the out- [} growth of a deliberate desire on the ’ part of unidentified cranks or be- lievers {n anarchistic doctrines. “The fact that the American flag was set afire in our church is sig- -’_‘flflmt, in my opinion,” said D. E. Cleveland, assistant pastor of the First Congregational. ‘‘No American ! would have attempted to damage the 1 flag of this country.” " The Incendiary attack was made while Rev. Frederick T. Rouse, the pastor, and the assistant were at lunch Friday. The fire was started in the center of the chureh, proctically destroying a large silk American flag bearing the name of the church, and a large map of Pal- estine, valued at 350. Inflammable ma- terials nearby were set afire and when the janitor of the church came in the alr was dense with smoke. Hé was able to extinguish the blaze without assis- tance. Serfes of Petty Attacks on Churches. Windows of the same church were broken the nights of November 13 and 14 . During the last two weeks fiithy objects have been several times left at the en- trances to the church. The feotprints of a man wearing & medium sized shoe was found. The per- son who set the fire used patent matches in small wood boxes, similar to those carried by smookers. /indows have been broken recently in Firet Methodist Episcopal and United Presbyterian churches. A plate glass window two by ten feet [} was broken at the store of Sommer Bros., | ‘Twenty-elghth and Farnam streets.
