The squaws and pappooses had all succeeded in oross- ing the river, and the warriors had fol- lowed. The military could not follow, for it would be impractical, and perhaps im- possible to cross the river at its high stage, in the face of a superior number of Indians. A messenger had been sent to Fort Laramie, and Colonel Moonlight, well known for his recent summary execution of thres renegade Indians, had | started from the fort with M0 well mounted men, when he met another courfer with the information that the Indians had crossed the river, whersupon he crossed at the fort and took up the pursuit. This constitutes another story, and the finish of the battle of Horse creek; the dead being the four named In the begin. ning of this article, and four others were | wounded. The dead were taken to Camp BShuman, the ruins of which are still dis- tinguishable, about 300 feet south of the ‘west end of the Platte river bridge, west of this city. And out southwest thereof about a quarter of a mile they were laid to rest, and thers have rested for this half a century ending the middle of June. And now from their obiiterated graves they will be removed to join their follows, the other early guardians of the Great| Overland Trall, in the cemetery set aside for their homor by the national govern- ment. BRUNDAGE SHOWS T0 BE HERE ALL THIS WEEK The 8. W. Brundage shows, declared to be a revelation in the carnival business wiil exhibit In Omaha for one week, starting tomorrow. The Brundage shows are considered among the largest on the road this season and comprise every at- traction which goes to make up a first class company, The management guar- antees that there Is not a single attraction which is in the least offensive. It is an- nounced that the management will not tolerate thethrowing of ‘‘confett!” or will it allow any other repulsive features. Among the shows which are on tour with the Brundage company is Leon Mar- whal 'amous Happy Days in Dixie- land."” This Is & minstrel attraction of re- nowned reputation and comes to Omaha for the first tim Thirty-five high-class minstrel perform- ers make up the card. Bach performer Is recognized as being a leader in the min- strel profession and the attraction is high class and complete in every respect. A concert band of twenty pleces is carried with this one show. Another of the excellent attractions which Mr, Brundage offers this season is the auto-drome In which several young women drivers risk their Itves in racing at expresa train speed around a racing course of sixty degrees. The “‘Miracle,” representing an elec- tric fllusion performance which is sur- passed by none, and many others will be offered by Mr. Brundage. L. SHUMWAY. SOOTT'S BLUFF, Neb,, July ¥.—George L. Wilcox, O. O. Ferbache and others are Jocating the long forgotten, neglected and obliterated graves of Captain Willlam D. Fouts, and his men, Philip G. Alden, ©a- tward McMahan and Richard Gregor, who Jost their lives a half century ago in the battle of Horse Creek. The work is undertaken under orders from Captain Roy B. Harper of the quartermaster’s corps of Omaha, and the remains are to be sealed in lead caskets and removed to the Military cemetery mt Cottonwood canyon, & little east of North Platte. The graves now lle under a field of alfalfa about four miles west of the ecity of Scottsbluff, close by the old ruin of Fort Mitchell. This fort was first bullt by Bruce Husband of the American Fur company and was named Fort Fonte- nelle, for Lucien Fontenelle, the father of Logan Fontenells. But it was later mamed Fort Mitchell, after General Mit- ehell. At the time of the Interment of Captain Fouts and his companions, it was called Camp Ehuman, and was & substation of Fort Laramie. It would be impossible to find these graves now were it not for the memory of old-tfmers, who thirty years ago, came tuto the valley riding the range, or look- i Ang for homesteads.
