A number of Omaha men have watched the development in the Bullders BEx- change bullding in Chicago and in Phila- delphia, and the Worlds Market bullding in New York, where a whole floor is de- voted to community offices. One office clerk answers the telephone for all the tenants. One main telephone brauch is instal nd in this manner the rent is teduced to individuals and the office problem is solved, Very often a young attorney or the be- ginner in the real ecstate and Insurance business finds himself able to pay a nico rent for an office, yet is unable to main- {tain a stenographer and telephone in his joffice. This plan proposes to rent to a i | man a desk room, with the uses of a |number of privata consulting offices, to give him a telephohe and a stenographer, who will answer his telephone calls while | he 1s out. Twenty- |¢ It THE COMMERCIAL CLUB s Lame 7,-:,3 Uiah Building in May The value of the permits taken out for May approxi- mates closer the total of the correspond- ing period in 1914 than that of any pre- ceding month this year, amounting, ac- cording to reports received by Dunn's Re- view from the bullding departments of elghty-two leading cities in the United States, to $73,738,163, as against $73,87,298, a decrease of only 2 per cent. To quite a material extent this unusually sat'sfac- | tory exhibit s accountedfor by the sub- stential gain at New York, that city re- porting permits granted calling for the expenditure of $25,667,120, a gain of 64.6 per cent over the $14,881,48 of the same month last year. The Borough of Man- Lattan makes a decidedly favorable com- parison with a year ago, with $13 66,625, aguinst $7,065,900, although $10,000,000 of this amount is represented by a single permit for a new municipal bullding, and the Bronx, with $4,634,950, against $1,37,413, also makes an exceptionally encoursging showing. In the boroughs of Brooklyn, Queens und Richmond, however, there is some contraction. Taken as a whole, the citles outside New York again make somewhat indifferent returns, the total at eighty-one points, $50,071,043, belng 15.9 per cent smaller than in May, 1014, when the aggregate reached $30,505,750. How- ever, indications of improvement are not entirely absent, inasmuch as repoits of increase at twenty-nine centers point to reviving activity. Among the most nota- ble gains are: Chicago, $982,80; Cleve- land, $2,060,089; Hartford, $261,41; Jersey City, $18,671; Newark, $162,47; El Paso, 3322962, and Gpringfield, Mass., $15(,202 On the other hand, sharp contraction appears at numerous points, those most pronounced being Baltimore, Detroit, In- dianapolis, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Minneapolls, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Pertland, Ore.; Rochester, St. Louis, St. Paul, S8an Franclsco, Seattle, Toledo and Worcester. BIG BANKS NOW ACCEPT SOME SMALL DEPOSITS (Correspondence of the Assoclated Press.) LONDON, June 7.—By accepting depos- its in amounts from 1 shilling upwards at 3% per cent, interest withdrawable on demand up to £5, and at ten days' notice over that amount, Floyd's bank with its 8% branches, is Instituting a democratic departure which may have far-reaching effects in the banking world, and become a serlous competitor to the Postoffice Savings' bank, which has had a monopoly of the small British public sav- ings, It was an unheard of thing a few years back for the great joint stock banks, even in suburban districts, to look at an account for less than $500, but competi- tion has become more keen recently, and even city banks have so far unbent as to accept drawing accounts of §250 with- out charging commission. This departure by Lioyd's bank is ex- pected soon to be followed by others. Bee Want Ads Produce Results.
