O i 5740 2,731 CATLLE—The week opened out witn comparatively light run of cattle, only sev- enty-two cars being reported in. 'This was RArtly due to the weak close to the trade last week and partly, no doubt, to the fact that the day was a general holiday. Sup- plies of beef cactle were the quality of the cattie no both dressed beef men and oucside buyers acted as If they needed some cattle and the result was a strong, active market, 0 far as it went. Both light and heavy grades were favored where they had qual- ity, but medlum and common kinds were, as usual, a little slow in moving. A good clearance was made, however, and the gen- eral tone t0 the trade was rather stronger than toward the close of last week. There were only about twenty loads of cows and helfers on sale and for the most part these sold in about the same notches as toward the close of last week. The demand was good for fat stock and oannner and feeder buyers were aotive competitors for the thin and common grades. “In-be- tween kinds were more or less draggy, but showed no decline of any consequence, as compared with Friday. Veal calves were fully steady and the same was true of bulls, stags and rough stock generally. A 8ood clearance of stockers and foeders was made last week and there was vers little stale stock in speculators’ hands this morning. Fresh receipts were very light and in anticipation of a falr country do- mand this week, yard traders picked thess up freely at fully steady. figures all round, The country .demand is still chiefly for 00d to choice light welght stuff and heavy and common quality kinds are slow and un. satisfactory sellers, Quotations on_cattle: Good to chofce fair to good corn- cornfed steers, §7.35G7.90; fed steers, $6.70@7.25; commbn to fair corn. fed steer: .60; good to cholce cows and heif $6.00G6.75, fair to good cows and helfers, $4.75@5.75; common to fair cows and heifers, $2.7504.60; good to cholce stook- 8 and feeders, $.75@6.40; common to fair tock helf- ckers and feeders, $3.50G4, $3T6@4.T5; veal calves, $3.75G7.50; bulls, 8, etc., 4. 36. Order buyers needed only a few loads and the bulk of rcceipts went to packers, the long strings costing $9.36619.40, the same s Saturday. Demand was fairly active and the big end of supply changed hands in very good season. Slightly lower advices from the east exerted a depressing influence on the trade | toward the close and practically all of the | late business was done at figures weak to a nickel lower, about twenty loads sell- ing on this basis. otal supply was limited, bulk going $0.35¢9.40 and tops remaining the same at last k's cl $9.45 Representative sales: No. Bh. br. The best lambs here sold a little highe= ihan the same class of stock last week, topping the market at $8.40. Shorn lambs of light or handy welght ' and prime quality are quotable up to $5.65, about 10c or 16c higher than extreme high quotations last Friday. Nothing of consequence was received to- day in the way of ewes or wethers, and the sheep branch of the trade remained nominallly steady. The supply of big mut- tons s of little account at present at all of the leading trade centers, Most of the larger feeders in the middle west cleaned up the bulk of thelr stuff some time ago and the recent slump in values has not served to encourage the marketing of the few shipments still in the country.
