VWeaudeis & Fous EFFECT OF STICENEY RATES —— icago Lines Figuring Out Just What Now Tariff Means. REVOLUTION FOR OMAHA’S GRAIN TRADE Nine-Cent Basia for Proportional Gives This City: Declded Advantage in Missouri River Distriet, ‘The railroad men of the city of Omaha Bave about:come ‘to the conclusion that President Btickney of the Chicago Great Western is shrewd man and one who knows what he is about before he makes a move in any direction. The conference of the executive officials of the several roads interested in the new proportional grain fates which Mr. Stickney's road has #dopted, held st Chicago on Tuesday, re- sulted In nothing, Of course the opposition Ynen tried to induce the' Great Western to anodify its rate through this city so as not 10 affect the throfigh rate from points west of Omaha, but It was of no avail. Mr. Btickney came back with the answer that it was not the desire of bis company to disturb the existing through rates, but he insisted that if the through lines did not want them disturbed they should in return Talse thelr rates west of the river. The general freight agents of all the principal roads are holding a conference &t Chicago to check over the new an- Mounced rates of the Great Western and as the matter now stands it looks as though they would all come to M Btickney's terms. On Oetober 24 the Gre Western announced that it would estab- lish & busis of 9 conts on wheat and flour and 8 cents on corn from Omaba to Min- peapolls, the gruin when originating west of the Mixsour!l river points to take a rate of 12 cents or higher on wheat and flour and 10 cents or higher.on corn. This is in addition to the Chicago rate announced at the same figures. but which has not yet Been made offcial Effect of the Changes. At the present time the“prevailing tarift “#8 21 cents, there never having been any proportional rate to gelther Minneapolls & Chicago Now comes the announcement that Mr Stickney Intends to modify this announce- ment to read points west of the Missouri river at the same figures as points adja- cent to the Missourl. Take, for example, A rate from Lincoln. This would be 9 dents 1 Omaba and 9 cents additional to the point of destination, virtually cuttipg the' through rate by 3 cents. This throws Omaha open to better rates than those en- Joyed by the shippers at Kansas City, and another war will be on in that territory The rate to Kansas City now reads at 12 cents from Lincoln, thus paking the 21-cent Tate with the additional 9 cents added How it Helps Om 3 Another point, the Great Western takes this graip at 9 cents to deliver at the destination from Omahs. Here is a ship- per at au intermediate point who cannot ship on the S-cent rate, but has to pay Heart Disease » :’un the bl nd iching al et e O creslstion with oo mfl’ nn Cure. Safe and ..r"‘“":.m.n"”"”" may the e — the regular old through rate of 14 cent This is one point that the competing wad) don't like, The only way they have ta 8ot aver it is.to begin to cit: thelr rates and establlsh local rates from all points through Iowa. Then Mr. Stickney says, If they do mot want the through rate dls- turbed, they may be able to increase their rates west of the Missourl. , Here s the point: A man, say sixty miles west of Omaha, under Mr. Stickney's first plan, has grain to send east, and the rallroads take It at say 16 cents, to deliver in this city. For the balance of the distance they will haul the same amount for 9 cents, while the distance is almost ten times as far. The whole thing is & much muddled up affai®and the outcome of the meet- ing at Chicago is awaited with interest. The local grain men are Immensely pleased over the turn things have taken and look for the establishment of a grain market in Omaha very soon, —_— You've heard some champagnes are good. Form an opinion of your own, founded on taste. You'll find Cook's Imperial better. —_—— Announcem, of the Theaters, The midweek matinee at the Orpheum this afterncon will be the amusement feature for theater patrons today. The bill is a varied one and includes features well calculated for the entertainment of women and children. In compliance with a num- ber of requests Wright Huntington -and his company will put on “A Stolen Kiss," which will be his oftering for the remain- der of the week. “At Cripple Creek,” a new and spirited drama from the pen of Hal Reld, will'be produced at the Krug theater tonight and for the remainder of the week. This lat- est success of Mr. Reld is a drama of startling and absorbing interest. The four acts move on to an exciting finish with the dash and briskness possible only to play dealing with life In the great west. The elaborate stage séts are a marvel of ingenuity and realism and give pletur- esque views of surpassing beauty in the heart of the Rackies. —— Fifth Ward Republicans.
