GREAT WESTERN CUTS RATES Btickney Throws qu Gauntlet to Other Ronds on Orein Traffie ANNOUNCES NEW PROPORTIONAL SHEET el with Kansas n . Shipped from This Point te Chicago, esident Stickney of the Chicago Greau and at mll: | Western has thrown down the gauntiet to et | his competitors and announced & propor- tional tariff on grain shipmests, 1o Chi- cago, placing Omala on the same level with Kansas City. This applies to all grain shipped Into Omaha from the west and allows a S-cent rate on whoat and flour and an S-cent Jyate on eorn to Chicago, nstead of 14 and 13 as at present. Ihe Burlington was the only ofice which had recefved a notificatién of this eut General Freight Agent Ives had a copy of the new tariff sheet on his desk. He said he could not yet announce what actiom his road or others would take, but that it was probable all would confer on the matter. This 18 the first step by the Great West- ern toward the reduction of rates beneficial to Omaha, and coming immediately upon the heels of President Stickney's announce- ment of his formal plans for the establish- ment of a graln market in this ¢ity, arouses intense interest and stimulates hope in the tangible benefits to betderived through the entrance of that road. This matter has been talked of for the past few weeks and rumors have been current that should the Great Western ut- tempt to put a new tarift on, the several and the Northwestern would make aii effort to Just what the outcome will be is awaited with much intetest. 1f reports prove ‘trie a big. upheaval involving sll local lines is looked for. Go to Meet Hare! A party of the Union Pacific ofcials left last evening for Chicago, Whefe they expect to enter into a conferente with E. H. Harriman, who is in’ that eity. The party went over the Northwestern in & private car and included President H. G. Burt, E. L. Lomax, [enetal passenger ent; John A. Munroe, freight trafic man- r, wnd Gerrit -Fort, assistant. general passenger agent. It is understood that thé result of the re- cent meeting of the division superintend- ents, which was held at the general offices a few days ago, will have something to do with it. The congested condition of the freight traffic has to be remedied and pes- sibly an order will be placed for some mew equipment. Mattcrs perfaining to the 'dif- ferent departments of the Hatriman roads will be discussed generally, and it is under- stood that a remedy will be suggested for the permanent repairing of the Lucin cut- off of the Southern Pacific where the grad- ing sank several days ago, causing consid- erable trouble in the bulldipg 6f this section of the road.
