The first step #dward the construction of the new quartermaster’s store house on the newly acquired property of the govern- ment, adjacent to the quartermaster's commigsary depots in this city, was taken Friday in the advertisement for pi for the bullding of the structure, by Cap- tain Willlam E. Horton, acting chief quar- termaster of the Department of the Mis- sourl. The bids will be opened at 10 o'clock a. m., November 16, The new structure will be an immense affair. It is to be 340 feet In length by 50 feet in width, and will be buflt of brick with steel girders. The bullding will be two storles In helght and first class in all respects. The gross receipts were $4,534681.78, being a decreass from last year's of $279,968.75, and the ex- penses, including the taxes, were $2,605,- 677.08, being a decrease from the last year's of $428,801.3. The total surplus in 1902 was $2.082817.26, and this year it ia $,099,004.65, making u decrease of $143,- §1261. The total number of miles of road operated this year In August was 534410, against 5,300.88 last year for the same pe- riod. This shows an increase of 84.22 miles in operation. Even In the last two months, that is September and August, there Is a decreass in the earnings of $109,999.35. The gross re- celpts for the two months were $9,123,839.48 agalnst $8,39,650.40 last year, being an In- crease of §727,280.06. The average number of miles operated for the two months was 6,894.28 agalnst 5,358.17, an Increase of 38.06 miles, Lucas in Richardson's Places William Lucas, present assistant superin- tendent of the Pullman company at this place, has been promoted to be superin- tendent to fill the vacancy caused by the death of J. F. Richardson. Mr. Lucas has been In the employ of the company for the last fourteen years and has filled almost every position with the company. He was born in East St. Louls and first became connected with the Pullman Interests in March, 1%9, when he moved to this city to accept the position of storekeeper. He only remained in this capaclty for a few months, until he was nmde a clerk in the office and later @ ticket agent, He held this last of- fice for ten years, or until it was abolished, and was made assistant superintendent of this district in June, 101. The many friends of Mr, Lucas will te glad to hear of his promotion, as it was one which they be- lieve to be deserving. The position of as- sistant superintendent wiil be filled by B. B. Dewey, who is being brought here from Minneapolis. Mr. Dewey was formerly an agent for the company in that city. Get Ready.
