LEWIS-LAMAR IS INDICTED Former Omaha Advertising Agent Turns Up Before Eastern Grand Jury. SOMETHING OF HIS CAREER WHILE HERE Ju Day, Dr. Stone and Bdward Haymaker Relate Interesting Things of Man Whe Asked Morgan for a Milllon. David Lamar, who lived in Omaha at one time under the name of David H. Lewis, has been indicted by the grand jury of Monmouth county, N. J., for an assault on his former coachman, James KoMahon, at Long Branch July § last. Two others who d to have been employed by Lewis the coachman, have also been ar- rested. They are Joe Brown and Willlam Delaney, who are sald to be bad citizena An indictment for conspiracy had been ex- peoted, but the jury went further and charged Lamar with participation. He pleaded not gullty and was bound over to the district court under bonds of $5,000, Lamar or Lewis, as he then styled him- solf, was In this city for about six months and had an office in the New York Life bullding. He was an advertising solicitor and always deep in some scheme with seven figures, yot always in poor olrcum- stanoes. . Judge Day of the district court went east about a year ago to identify the man In New York. He had begun legal proceed- ings to prevent the formation of the North- ern Securities company and through a man named Hodge had also finstituted wuit against the United States Steel corporation. “It was thought In the east” sald Judge Day, “that ke was attempting to hold up the financiers interested in these prop- ositions, and In fact they told me that he had seen J. Plerpont Morgan and told him that for $1,000,000 he would drop the procedings against the Northern Securities company. I easily identified the man at the race track. I knew him first in this city when I acted as his attorney in & small suft over some office furniture. I also made out the papers for him In another transaction and it was in this way, I hav- ing witnessed his signature, that they knew that 1 had some acquaintance with the man.” Lamar, or Lewis, had an extensive ao- quaintance in Omaha. Dr. R. M. Btone, who made his acquaintance, professionally, sald: "1 was glad to read of his being indicted. ,This man Lamar was an advertising solicitor or agent of some kind. While in Omaha he went under the name of David H. Lewis. He was a smooth chap and always had plenty of money, but would not pay his bills. He was here during the vear 18%. In January and March of that year I treated both Lamar and his wite, for ‘which services I was never paid. Lamar boarded at the Merrian hotel and I am not sure that he paid his bill in full there ‘My bill was for $5 and he represented to me he was a well-to-do man and I trusted him. Don't know how he repre- wented himself to others. He was a high fiyer and always had money.” ‘The Rees Printing company still cherishes the memory of Lewis, for he is still on its books for work done In printing ad- vertising blotters and other work. Edward Haymaker of the company also is his creditor in & personal matter for some $50.
