NEEDS MORE HOUSES. There Are Not Now And Never Has Been Enough Houses to Rent. GOOD BUSINESS PROPOSITION. The Commercial Club: Might Take Up the Matter of Building -a Number of Residences to Rent and Thus Be- come a Public Benefactor, There is not today and never has been, since the first-house was built on the present site of Grand Rapids, an available habitable building that is not and has not been occupied. As a consequence rents have always been high withthe demand much greater than the supply. Prof. W. B. Stewart, superintendent of the Grand Rapids’ scoool8, had about given up hope of being able to secure a home for his family, when fortu- nately he was able to secure the house vacated this week by Prof. Carroll. Is the well dressed man, when he has been fitted out with a handsome new suit by us. You get measure for measure here, and one hundred cents dollar of your money. of the tailoring art at Reasonable Prices. DonaHUE worth of satisfaction on every We are making suits in the highest style Prof. Stewart said he thought houses to rent were a scarce commodity in Bemidji, but Grand Rapids could beat anything in that line that he had ever known, considering the size and importance of the place. His experi- ence is similar to that of nearly every one who comes here to live. If their circumstances and business are not such as to justify them in buiiding, their chances of securing a home are very slim. Business men of Grand Kapids have frequently discussed the advisability of forming a building as- sociation for the purpose of putting up a number of homes to rent, but up to the present time this talk has not resulted in any definite action peing taken. Now that the town has a well organized and active business associa- tion in the Commercial club, the vital importance of proyiding the means with which to supply the long felt want should be given jmmediate consideration. If there are not those who reside here aad have the means to make the investment, there is plenty of outside capital looking for just such a splendid opportunity as is presented by Grand Rapids for the investment of money in thé building of homes to rent. L. D. Lyman of 149-26, who was in town this week, reports that the Ttasca railroad is now being completed to Kildare lake in that township, The grade was built some time ago, but for some reason the last three miles of track was not laid. Now a the terminal will be at Kildare'lake in a few days. | | | | re the Dates Fixed For the. Itasca County Fair. REMIUM LIST IS REVISED ee ena -— he Executive Committee of ‘Itasca County Agricultural | Association Have Fixed the Dates For 1803 Fair. + On Tuesday and Wednesday, Sep- tember 29th and 3oth, the Itasca cqun- ty fair will be held this year, The committee has carefully gone over the prennum hist and made such re- visions and additions as were con- sidered advisable, The shipments of farm and garden produce that were made to the state fair is an indication that the showing to be made will compare very favorably with any ef- forts heretofore attempted, While the season has been backward this year owing to !ack of rain during June and part of July the moisture of the last days of July aud- all through August has had a tendency to advance vege- tation to an extent that will result in a fair average yield of crops, Secretary Graffam says he has reason to believe that there will be a very creditable showing made at our coming fair, and president Frank Freestone, who was in town this week, expressed the opinion that if the proper effort is put forth the 1903 fair will excell all others that have been held in the county. ‘The Herald-Review prints the full premium list in ghis issue for the 1n- spection of all who are interested Next week it will be printed in pamph- let form and distributed throughout crew of track layers ere at work and |) the county. RELIANCE WINS THIRD RACE. Sir Thomas Lipton Again Fails to Lift the America’s Historie Trophy. *# New York, Sept. 3.—The Reliance won ithe third and last race for Ameri- eas cup in a decesive victory over th®Shamrock. _Today’s race was but a ‘ition of the last two, the Re- liance at once forging to the front after crossing the line and maintain ing her lead over the entire course. The wind freshened as the yachts sailed and when they came in the home run Reliance fairly flew through the -'water, with Shamrock traveling fast. but a long distance in the rear. When within a few miles of the finish a dense fog closed in, shutting out all view from the shore. Reliance finished at 5:30 with the Shamrock apparently about _ three miles. astern, THE MAN ESCAPED. Game Warden Philip Failed to Find His Man Cameron. Hector Cameron, of whom mention was made in the last issue of the Herald-Review as being the operator of a moonshine tannery on Coldwell brook in the Big Fork country, has evidently made his. escape to Canada. Some days ago he was secn going down the Big Fork River in a canoe, headed for Ft. Francis. He had threatened to kill any man who un- dertook to affect his arrest for viola- tions of the game laws, and rather than not keep his word he concluded to leave the country. Mr. Philip and Deputy Sheriff Hulburt made a trip up to Came.on’s place but he was not to be found. It may be that he will returo later when he hears that the grame authorities have become less active. In that eventhe will probably haye an opportunity to make good his desparate threat. : New Game Warden. | Mr. W. L. Corbett of Detroit, Minn., has been appointed deputy game warden for Itasca county.
