CONTRACTOR HAS MUCH WORK TO DO Lobeck Recedes 1 tion to Prolong ¥ & Off Repnirs sary to Stree Assertions that no new paving could be done this year owing to the red tape fu- volving petitions are denied at the city hall A well known paving contractor sald yesterday that he hed petitions complated for nearly 50,00 yards of asphaltum which he ald pl down befores winter if no further hitch oceurs. 80 far this summer but two petitions bave been filed with the city clerk. Oue is for the paving of Twentieth street from Dodge to Farnam, sdvooated by the Omaha elub, and tha other is*for Dodge street from Twenty-seventh to Twenty ninth avenue, A petition for the paving ef Harney street from Twentieth 10 Twenty-fourth has not been acted upon. Another issue crept inta the specifications fight when it was asserted that the resolu- tion sent to the couticil by the Board of Public Works asking for the return of all specifications to correct alleged illegalities 1s mandatory, By some of the Interested parties it is held that unless the specifica- tons ate returned £o tho board the procesd- ings will not be invulnerable and would in- volve speclal taxes levied for paving. Can Hold Thirty Days. On the other hand, the claim is made that the council has the right to hold the specifi- cations for thirty days, Which time wil not expire until next week, and in the mean- time to take such action as it chooses, re- gardless of further communicatfon on the subject fron: the board Comptroller Lobeck sald vesterday that he has no desire to further prolong the fight, but would ask the city wtformey for an opinion on the new question in order to Insist that the procecBings be regular. Approval of the new isphalt repair epect- fications was given by the councll in a spe- clal session yesterday afternoon. ‘The reg- ulations provide that work shall begin not later than August %, and shall be com™ pleted within sixty days. They are sep- arate and distinet from the new paving specifications and will go o the mayor for confirmation. ORDER FRONT__EIRE ESCAPES After Inspection of ng, Decide Better Facilities for Safety Necessary. Oomeials, — . As a result of the Midland Pamt and Glass company fire, fire escapes wil] be or- dered placed on the front of the E. W. Nash buflding at 1608-16 Harney wstreet. Deputy Labor Commissfonet Busch, Fire Chief Salter and Bullding Inspector With- nell have conferred about the matter and have decided that a front escape is Im- perative. The bullding i8 five stories high, not of fireproof conmstruction and’ while equipped with escapes on' the rear these are not considered sufficlent. That front escapes should be previded was shown during the fire, when one man was compelled to make a dangerous leap to the roof of the Schlitz bufiding and another was rescued through a window by firemen with ladders. It is not thought the owner of the building will oppase the llfluhtlon of the additional appliances.
