e 10 THE OMAHA DAILY BEE: THURSDAY, AUGUST 13, 1903. STICKNEY STILL HOLDS ROAD Presidest of Great Western Denies Its Bale to the Gonld System. NO CHANGE TO BE MADE IN OWNERSHIP Minnesota Magnate Says His Will Enter Omaha Between Mid- dle of Steptember and First ot October. Road A prominent local rallroad officlal who has just returned from St. Paul, declares that the report that the Gould interests have secured control of the Chicago Great ‘Western 18 given general credence by those men who are cluse to all of the large rail- road deais. For ten days or two weeks a persistent yumor has been in circulation to the effect that the Great Western had changed hands, but 1t has been impossible to confirm it. President Stickney of the Great West- ern is in the city and denied that any change had been or was to be made In the ownership of his road. “No exact date has been set for the coming of the Great Western into Omaha. Bome time between September 15 and Octo- ber 1,” he sald, ‘‘we begin giving service to Omaha. It s not possible to give an exact date, as there are so many things to be decided upon and to be done. This business of laying track and preparing for the handling of the trains is dependant upon many things—the weather, the work- men and the arrival of supplies—so that you see we do not know ourselves just when we will get started. You can be sure, though, that we will begin running cour trains into Omaha just as soon as the fgrack s ready to handle them over.” New Cure for W Lun; Dr. King's New Discovery for Consump- tion cures all coughs, colds, grip and lung troubles or no pay. b0c, §1.00. Willlam Roberts and Charles Clausen, whom John Johnson of Towa said tried to get him to bet on the padlock game, were fined 33 and costs each by Police Judge Berka. Not having the necessary cash, the men were elected to go to jall. Wil lam Jackson, who is belleved to be the third member of the swindling party, has not yet had a hearing. Several days ago Johnson met one of the men at the Webster street station and the latter after a few moments' conversation invited Johnson to take & walk. Then fol- lowed the finding of the padiock, the meet- ing of the second stranger and the offer to bet. Johnson had undergone a similar ex- perience and he promptly left the men and Yeported to the police. Roberts and Clau- sen were later arrested and identified. At the trial the men clalmed they were not ncquainted and had met accldentally shortly after the finding of the padiock. Colonel Joe Mik, passenger director at the Burlington station, told the court that he had seen the two men together at the sta- tlon on several occasions. The police are highly pleased with the conviction of these men, as thelr arrest was the first of the kind for several years, | though the padlock game has been worked many times during the last year. They belleve that both Roberts and Clausen are clever artists in that line, but {nasmuch as they falled to work their game on John- won, they were charged only with being vagrants. ‘Whether going to the mountains or sea shore or taking a journey on business or pleasure never leave home without a bottle of Chamberlain's Colie, Cholera and Diar- rhoea Remedy.
