RUNNING FIGHT WITH ROBBERS Night Watchman at Maxwell Surprises Them at Work and Ex- changes Shots. PERRY, Ia., Dec. 80.—(Special Telegram.) ~About 1:30 this morning, as Night Watch- man Cure was on his rounds at Maxwell, la., forty miles cast of here on the Mil- aukee railway, he saw two men trying to get into the state bank. Calling on them to throw up their hands, he fired two shots at them. At the same instant they ordered him to throw up his hands. As soon as he shot at them, Cure turned and ran in the opposite direction looking for help. Passing by a store building another man stepped in front of him, firing point blank at him. The charge missed his head but took the tional council to arrange details for® the meeting tomorrow, when the council will take up two leading subjects to prepare a report for presentation to the state asso- clation. The first meeting of the assocl tion proper will be held tomorrow evening. It is expected that James T. Gray, county superintendent of Grundy county, will be made president of the association. Some effort is being made to have the next meet- ing of the association taken to some other city next year owing to the fact that the assoclation is compelled to meet this year in the churches of Des Moines. A meeting of the Jowa Academy of Scfence was begun this afternoon in the offices of the State Geological society in the state capitol and various papers were read.
