10 THE OMAHA DAILY BEE: WILL INVEST TWO MILLION Book Island Will Make Big Imprevements in Nebraska and Iowa. CUT-OFF FROM FAIRBURY TO HERINGTON New Line Wil Direct Outlet to Southwestern Territory Early In the New Year. Omaha Jobbers The Rock Island has decided to expend $2,000,000 in permanen improvements along ite line in lowa, Nebraska and on west to Denver in 1903. These improve- ments are to be in the form of the bal- lasting of tracks and increasing depot fa- cllities. The year just closing shows tre- mendous improvements by the Rock Island through the southwest and the mew year will bring this campaign of betterment to the north The most important of all the new work o be done in this section during the next year is of great interest to Omaha. It is the construction of a new and direct line from Fairbury, Neb., to Herington, Kan., establishing a cut-off that will form a continuous connection with the main line and give a perfect outlet to the great southwest and even to the gulf. This will afford Omaha jobbers a short and direct | tributary country shipping large line to this valuable where they are already quantities of goods. Omaha wares have for some time found | ncreasing sale in the southwest, but owing to the lack of perfect railroad facilities the trade has not reached the proportions | It might and doubtless will when the Rock Island completes its new cut off, which will be as early in the new year as possi- ble. All the work contemplated under the appropriation of $2,000,000, and the con- struction of this new line, is to be under- en enarly in the spring and pushed with very facility. McDonaugh lmmIEYl'lfln agent of the Union Pacific, is back from Cali- fornla, where he went with the original tourist train of eight cars, which took seventy-six Dunkards from Belleville, Kan., to Lillls, Fresno county. The Dunkards bought land at from $3 to $46 an _acre and have settled in that country. They took horses and some other stock with them. The trip was made from Kansas City to Bacramento in a few hours over three days without an accident DRAWS HANGING BY CHANCE Jomeph Faler Decides Mode of End- ing Lite by Drawing Lots. Three small slips of paper decided the manner {n which Joseph Faler, the young Roumanian who committed suicide at the Victoria hotel Monday morning, should bring about his own destruction. The young forelgner courted death to relieve him from the cares which encompassed his life and held a solitaire lottery in which he decided the mode of ending his life. Taking the slips of paper he wrote upon them the words, “hanging,” “shooting’” and *polson.” Shuffiing these together, he drew one of them, and the choice fell to the hanging route and was carried out. These facts are revealed in the translation of the letter left by Faler to his brother Sam. The coroner’s jury decided at a late hour Monday afternoon that Faler came to his death by his own hand. The funeral was held this afternoon from Brailey's under- taking rooms, the body being taken to Pleasant Hill cemetery for interment.
