Shortly be- | fore 2:30 prices were at the highest of the day, und net gaing of 2 points or over had | been ined by leading stocks here and | there In all the prineipal groups, such as | Pennsylvania, Southern Pacific, Missourl | Pacific, 8t Paul, Rock Island ' preferred, luwire & Hudson and Bugar. In the last half hour St. Paul drop) back ab- raptly %, and some of the other stocks were carfled swiftly downward. The ine terpretution of the mov ent was belleved to be that the powerf Interests in the fin fal world, which announced their or- ganigation yesterday i the protection of [ the money market, desired warning that they had no in & those plans to be Interfered with, re was more or less realizing before the close by the profe sional traders, who bought on yesterday's market and early this morning. Pgevious to the final slump the ¢ of prices was quite prosper- ously upward, There were reports of assurances re- celved by the Btate department regarding the Intentlons of Great Britain and Ger- many in Venezuela, which tended to show & better feeling in that direction, but the principal cause of the rise was the amsuring formation of the bankers' po providing $50,00,00 for use in a_possib emergency. The effect was to relleve the stock market. Offerings became light in View of the fact that It was found pos: #ib to manipulate prices on very slight purchases. This was the notable case [among some of the inactive stocks, among which the floating supply is always lght, expeclally In the Vanderbilt group. There was some surprise expressed, however, over the extent of the protective measures taken by the tunks. There the excess surmise | a8 a possible need for these measuros, which has not been dlsclosed, and a dls- position to” consider that the existence of such @ need was indicated by the forma- tion of the pool. While It was recognized that no part of this fund would likely find Its way directly into the stock market, it was considered probable that further with- drawals of loar om the stock market would be avolded, owing to the unfavor- able sentiment which the heavy stock liqui- dation has caused. The principal good which 1t Is hoped to achleve by the an- nouncement of the large resources avai | able 18 upon sentiment. Part of the pres- ent stringency 1s undoubtedly due to the withholding of funds by persons who have become timid, or who have determined to walt for high money rates before lending their resources.
