DES MOINES, Nov. %1.—(Special.)— Thanksgiving day was ushered in here by a thrilling » 1o on Bixth avenue, where strest car ran madly downtown for more than & half mile along one of the leading wiroots of the city, at times golng at a rate of from thirty to forty miles an hour. The street wan an old single truck car which had long boen regarded as dangerous and the company had contemplated putting |1t out of commission many times. When the car turned into Sixth avenue at Bchool stroet the brake broke and the trolley flew the wire. For a quarter of a mile there was a moderate downgrade, but enough to glve the car great Impotus. Luckily the car kept the tracks for two or three blocks farther At Orand avenue an outgolng car was standing on the switch. The runaway car loft the track and tore off the side of the standing car, which was walting to pass. Then the car turned toward the sidewalk and at Looust street plunged Into the curb In front of a drug store. A lamp post broke the force of the crash and the car came to a sudden stop ou the sidewalk. The oar was torn and sbattered to pleces. Changes in G d Numbers. The adjutant general has issued an order making & change in the names of the vari- ous regiments of the lowa National guard. The regiments in the guard as reorgan- ized after the Cuban war were given the number names of the volunteer regiments from Iowa in the regular service. This has been a source of annoyance to the guard and to the volunteers. Now the names are changed from the Forty-ninth to Fifty-second and are given the names Fitty-third to Fifty-sixth inclusive. At the same time there s some rearrangement of the military districts and a few changes in companies. The Oskaloosa company is changed and put into the Fifty-fourth regi- ment. The Burlington company is changed from F to H and the Chariton company goes nto the Fifty-Afth. The vacancy caused by the fallure of the Stuart com- pany has not as yet been filled. It on We ng Day. In the best exhibition of fost ball seeu in Council Bluffs since the days of the blg games between lowa and Nebraska the Dodge Light Guards yesterday afternoon defeated the lowa State Normal on Manawa fleld by & score of 16 to 11. The sixteen points made by the Guards consisted of three well-carned touchdowns and one goal, while the visitors had, to their credit a touchdown, a goal and a safety. It was by good, straight, hard play that the Guards crossed the goal line of their opponents for each of the three touchdowns, while the visitors secured their Louchdown by a spectacular play that gave them an easy try for goal, and their safety accrued to them through a kick by the Guards that rebounded from the Guards' own line. From start to finish it was ever apparent that the local team was the stronger; even In the second half, when it was expected the Guards would show the lack of training as against their well-trained opponents, they stood up to the play and saw the battle out like the men of the gridiron they have proved themselves to be, by never being beaten. The Guards again, as on the occasion of the game with Highland Park, ehowed excellent interference and seldom failed to gain ground. They relied on no particular style of play to .nake thelr gains, but made progress either at bucking the line or by end runs. In the latter plays Dietrich and Dalley were good for gains right alon, and when a line play was undertaken Wil- liams was the best material. - Makes Spectacular Play.
