POINTERS About the Omaha Commercial College 17 & Douglas Sts. ROHRBOUGH BROS’ PROPS. POINTER NO. 1~New classes in all departments tomorrow morning. begin then. POINTER NO. 2-1f you intend to become a stenographer it Is very important what system of shorthand you learn. The Pitman, Graham and Munson are back numbers. The best schools no longer teach them. The Gregg system, in its purity, has long, cumbersome outlines and must drop terminations in order to get any speed, and when this fs done its legibility Is destroyed. The Improved Gregg is the only system ever yet devised which eliminates all the bad features of all other systems and utllizes principles which enable the writer to write rapidly and yet so he can read his notes. Improved Gregg s extremely simple. It has but one position, one slant, no shades, but few wordsigns and has the highest degree of speed. It is as much superior to Gregg as Graham Is superior to Pitman. Students who learn it make the best stenographers. POINTER NO. $—Our text book on Improved Gregg Is now out any one for $1.50. Every Gregg writer ought to have a copy. POINTER NO. 4-No answers have yet been received from our ad. in last Sunday's Bee offering $17 in prizes. Even Mr. Gregg has not won any one of them. You will find the same prizes offered in today's Daily News at top of page 4. If you have not seen them, get a paper at once. POINTER NO. 5—Our Business department had several new students last week. Several more enter tomorrow. This department Is operated upon an original plan of Prof. Lampman and wondefful results are obtained. The course of study has been enlarged and all stereotyped methods discarded. Our Board of Trade is a new and valuable feature. Profs. Lampman and Savage are wide awake to the Interests of this department, and both are professional penmen. No other school in Omaha employs even one expert penman. POINTER NO. 6-Our Telegraph department is forging to the front. New students enter each week, and the work grows more interesting. 1f you want a course In telegraphy we can give it to you. B2 #l PER WEEK- h of court hous: SOME PLAIN TALK about SHORTHAND SYSTEMS ‘We have been asked to review a book called ‘‘Mosher Shorthand,” by Fred W. Mosher—or, as he is usually described in the announcements of the college with which he I8 connected—'‘Professor” Mosher. The book reached us a day or two ago, and we have not yet had time to carefuily examine it, but when we do 8o we intend to give the public a fuller and more entertaining account of it. For the present we will con- tent ourselves with a few. brief remarks. Another "“!mprovement” Mosher Shorthand” is put up in a brilllant red cover, exactly the same style as the “Practical Stenographer,” by the same “author,” which made its appearance about ten years ago, ‘The Practical Btenographer: was published by Messts. Rohrbough Bros. s an “improvement” on the Graham text book; but this is a hard, unappre- clative world, and the “Practical Stenographer” died young, - “Mosher Shorthand’ professes to be an ‘“improvement’ on Gregg Shorthand, but Its career will be as brief and inglorious as that of its predecessor. Pity the Poor Student! The alphabet of the Mosher “‘system’ is taken bodily from Gregg S8horthand with- out acknowledgment, and probably without shame, but the “author,” after introduc- ing some arbitrary vertical (which, in the original ‘spelling with which the Mosher ap) verticle) strokes and hooks of various lengths and sizes. Anyone who has any practical experlence in Gregg Shorthand will instantly recognize what must be the inevitable consequences of such radical violations of the fundamental principles of the system when there is any attempt at speedy writing. Any writer of Gregg Shorthand could adopt the wo-called new principles” If he de- sires to do so, and this fact In {tself manifestly renders it impossible for the ““Mosher system” to'survive. But no PRACTICAI writer would ever dream of adopting these far-fetched expedients and fine-drawn distinctions any more than he would think of adding a fifth wheel to a wagon. The Humor of It This time we will not allude to the m.nr a absurdities and contradictions occurring &whlch word 18 spelled “occuring” in four places on the second page of the Mosher 00K) in every plate of shorthand, but will merely give a few lllustrations which are haracteristic of the whole “system." e 71 is a sign given for the termination “ocity” (which is taken from Gregi Bhorthand), yet on page 130 the word “reciprocity” is writien “recipre This wor proves three things; first, that “Professor’ Mosher never knew how to write the word correctly in Grei horthand; second, that he does not know how to write it correctly in his own ‘s third, "that his claim that terminations are not dropped in his “system” cannot be substantiated—but the latter fact could be demonstrated from every page of the text book. In the next plate of shorthand the first word, “ambition,” is written “ambish;" but on page 141 it is written ‘‘mb! Evidently the “‘author'’ should take a few lessons in his own * . 'We could go on quoting example after example, but what is the use? OQur sympathy goes out to the poor student who Is attempiing to reach ny real efficlency by sugh a mixed-up jumble of Pitmanic and Gregg Shorthand. "What 81d can hé expect from an “author: or teacher who does not Know how to write even simple words consistently In his own text book? Incidentally, we would suggest that “‘Professor” Mosher get someone to revise the English of his'book. As an illustration: On page 1% he informs the student that “the past tense of verbs are sometimes represented by the disjointed ‘t';" “the past tense ARE" Is a good illustration of “English as she Is wrote!"" System Making While You Wait At thig point we deem it well to make public some things which are not generally ¥nown, fome @lx months after they intraduced Gresg Shorinand into_the Omaha ommércial college, Messrs. Rohrbough Bros. threateried that unless we would grant them the exclusive right to teach Gregg Shorthand for the entire state of Nebraska they would bring out a ‘Mosher Shorthand,” which was then In_preparation. The letter in which this threat was made lles before us as we write. e point we Wish to make 18 that after teaching Gregg Shorthand less than six months and without having had any practical experience in writing it, Mr. Mosher was preparing an *'im- provement” on it, as he had previously done with the Graham method. In the summer Of 1901, Mr. Mosher attended u convention of Gregg Shorthand teachers held at Chi- cago (at which the principles of the revised edition were given to the teachers in ad- Vance of Its publication. and It is recorded in the report of the convention, which appeared In the Gregg Writer for August. 1901, that one teacher only left the room When the examination for teachers' certificates was given. That teacher was Mr. Mosher, and our readers can readily conjecture from what we have aiready written why he did not desire to take the examination. y: To the Shorthand Student We earnestly urge those students who began the sfudy of the “Mosher System" under the impression that It was “Gregg improved,” to attend some school where the system is taught in its purity and not in an adulterated and impracticable form. By 8¢ doing they will save time, 'abor, mone y and 'nuch disappointment. Their Last Resort Since writing the foregoing, we have received a papsr containing some herolc cha lenser Erom Mekars. Rohrbough, and we note them s & gratitying evidence that our campaign 1 having its effect. ‘The shorthand outlines given as representing Gregg Shorthand are welcome, Indeed, as proving the point Wwe h made as to Mr. Mosher's lack of knowledge of our system. They are written just as we should expect Mr. Mosher to write Gregg Shorthand, and every writer of Gregg Shorthand will laugh forms. A P o ot ke fo bring business education down to the level of the prize ring, we are prepared to meet Messrs. Rohrbough Bros. on their own ground, and fight them with their own weapons if necessary, so long as they continue (o use the Aime of Gregy Shorthand to boost “Mosher Shorthand.” The name GREGG has an Bonorable record, and for obvious reasons we will not permit it to be used in this way ‘Next week we will attend to the challenge.
