Aug. 15.—(Special.)—Be- t minight and mérning more than two and a half inches of rain fell in this city and at the same time there was a heavy windstorm, accompanied by lightning. The Des Moines river, which had got down to nearly its normal coddition for this sea- mon of the year, suddenly rose two feet. The streets were flooded and street car trafiic early this morning was stopped. The home of F. W. Stilwall on Fourth street ‘was struck by lightniig and the house set on fire. The roof was burhed off, the loss being covered by insurance. The inmates of the house were ubharmed. They were Mrs. Stilwell, Mr. and Mrs. B, F. Steadman and Mrs. Jobn Barber and daughter, of Atlantic. - The storm had awakened Mrs. Stilwell who had got up ‘wes engaged in reassuring the children in their room when the lightning struck the chimney.
