Plans are out for the erection of large bulldings at Forts Riley and Leavenworth, to be completed for the War department next year It possible. The artillery bare racks are particularly needed at, Fort Riley, as for several months one battery has been camping upon the military roservation. This battery was stattoned at ¥ort Robin- son before the arrival of the Twenty-sec- ond Infantry in the department and was transferred to Fort Riley at that time with- out adequate room for its accommodation The specifications at Fort Riley call for the erectlon of one double cavalry bar- racks, one artillery barracks, one gun shed, three fleld officers’ quarters, two double- line officers’ quarters, two double non- commissioned staff officers’ quarters and one bakery. At Fort Leavenworth the bufldings to be erected are six infantry barracks, ome ar- tillery barracks, one artillery guard house, shop, etc., one artillery stable, one artil- lery gun shed and one bakery. A board of officers, consisting of Colonel H. 8. Turrill, Colonel E. J. McClernand and iptain W. R. Grove, will meot Saturday at the headquarters of the department to examine Finley M. Smock, Iate of the Fifth Towa cavairy, as to his qualifications as superintendent of a military ceraetery. The examination into the fitness of Cap< tain Daniel B. Oity Attorney Connell, for whom Judge Estelle has been walting for some time, appeared in the latter's court Friday morn- ing and took the court's announcement. that his motion for a new hearing in the action brought by former Police Judge, Gordon against Mayor Muores to corupel him to sign a salary warrant for Gordon for part of 1901 is overruled. The court gave him until September 15, or forty-six days, to get into the supreme court with his bill of exceptions, and in the meantime the peremptory writ is in abeyance, and the mayor to give personal bond for the appeal costs. D., Aug. 1.—(Special)— ‘While there have beem several light ship- ments of cattle at times through July, the first heavy shipment to the edstern mar- ket was made from this city Monda: when two trains with twenty-seven care of cattle and several cars of horses and sheep were sent out. The heaviest part of the shipment went to the Chicago mar- ket, being beef stuff, but one of the trains went to Sloux City with feeder stock.
