Drake to got the best of Douglas county by more than $20,000 In his bridge building, and he hade that opinion known at yesterday morn- ing's meeting of the board by presenting a resolution calling upon the bridge com- mitteo, of which he I8 chairman, to have a competent engineer inspect the new bridge at the county poor farm, report on tbe merits of the workmanship and esti- imate the falr cost of bullding such a struc- ture. Commissioner Connolly moved the adop- tion of the resolution, saying: ‘‘For many months now we have had this constant talk about bridges and I wish we could get the matter cleared up and the talk shut up. By all means let's probe the thing, and if there be a nigger in the woodpile, smoke him out It there lsn't any nmigser let's have peace I am tired of this constant hinting.” All members voted aye. Afterward O'Keeffe sald: “1 hadn't in- tended to bring this subject up until after the Board of Equalization matters were out of the way, but I understand the con- vention this aftetnoon Is thinking of re- nominating some of our men and I wanted them to know in advance that this matter ‘would come up.” O'Keefle O'Keeffe {s not talking at random and without preparation, apparently, for he has his desk piled high with old contracts, warrants and other documents in evidence. Among these is a table complled from the records of meetings, showing that between August 18, 1900, snd November 30, 1901, Drake received fom the county commis- sloners $46,837.4, Upon the latter date his contract was extended to December 31, by which time he worked In another $15,198.69, making a total of $62,036.10. Of the $15,- 198.69, however, there remains one last in- stallment of $5,000 that has not been turned over to Drake and it s the payment of this that O'Keeffe is seeking to prevent. He cites the new bridge at the county poor farm, showing that according to con- tract price of $28 per foot of span and $20 for tubing the structure, which is 110 feet span with two approaches of fifteen feet each and with elghty feet of tubing fn ft, sbould have cost $4,752, whereas the records show, he alleges, that the board allowed $14,922.69 for this same bridge, or $10,170.69 too much. In contrast he cites the steel bridge on road 117D, over the Elk- born, which is 210 feet long and cost but $4,600. It was bullt by a competitor of the company represented by Drake. Acts Like Wateh Dog. Has Evidence. The remarks that O'Keeffe makes in opening his bridge fight are polnted. “Will y one presume to say that a man could #it on this board while such things were going on and not know about it? And then will anybody presume to argue that 1 am entirely blameless if I sit on the fence and watch another man stea} apples with- out protesting, particularly when I have been especially chosen to watch that same fruit? “I have been going through the records for some time and I belleve that $40,000 ‘would have been a falr price for the bridge work that Drake has charged the county $62,000 for. In this investigation at the poor farm bridge I would be glad to see not one, but three engineers act. For instance, the county, the ecity and a third engineer to be chosen by them." The commissioners adjourned until next Baturday morning. They will sit through the week as a board of equalization. THE FAVORITE FAUSTS Many Attractions Today Week at Courtland Beach. Mana- wa bas Its regular patrons and Mr. A. A. Covalt, the director of the band, s doing much toward the enjoyment of its visitors. Covalt's Manawa band 18 already known to lovers of fine music as one of the finest bands ever brought together in this part of the country. It astonished people on Frie day morning Iast when it serenaded the newspaper offices. While they had seen the band advertised and heard friends speak of it as a fine band, they did not realize what a prize they had giving concerts every afternoon and evening at Manawa. The {Council Bluffs people seem to appreciate this fact better than Omahans, but with fine seasonable weather Omaha will un- doubtedly turn out its full quota. Forty musicians, every man a recognized star, is something any locality might be proud of This band is composed of musicians from hu parts of the world, selected by Mr. Covalt entirely upon their merits. The obo player arrived yesterday from the east and has taken his place with the band. They are probably only elght or ten obo players in the United States today. It is a very dificult instrument to master, and in addition, one that is recognized as a nerve wrecker on the one playing it. The |Georsia minstrels will give two dally per- formances in the theater at Manawa.
