Then he settled down and struck Wolfe out and Ketchem and Hartman both flew out. In the seventh Gordon was touched for a couple of hits, netting one more score, and that the procession for the visitors, Tom Letcher's Home Run. All of this time it looked pretty dublous for the locals. A couple of singles was all that they had been able to corral, and to the big crowd of fans in the stands and on the bleachers it looked as though the Mis- sourlans were going to give us a shut-out Thomas Letcher willed to the contrary, however. He stepped up to the plate in the seventh and soaked out a fine home run, the ball flying away over right-field fence. The old war-horse was accorded an ova- tion that he never will forget In the ninth, with the score & to 1, it looked like there might be a hot wind-up. Buckley started off by striking out and Letcher trotted down to first by being hit with a pitched ball. Calboun soaked out a sizling grounder to right fleld and Hart- man's juggle of it permitted Letcher to cross the plate. Reid soaked out a single and Stub Toman distinguished himself by striking out. Gonding rapped a warm one down to Captain O'Brien and the captain fumbled it. permitting Calhoun to score. That left Reld on third and Gonding on first. BRISTOL, R. I, May Z1.—Up and down rragansett bay today the cup defender. Constitution, was put through Its first paces and acquitted itself, as Mr. Duncan, the manager, sald, most satisfactory. Start- ing out this forenoon in a dying out west- erly breeze, it showed itself an excellent drifter, while in the afternoon a fine southwester sent jt scudding about the bay in a lvely fashion, with little fues and scarcely any feathery foam under the smooth bow or in its clean wake Every polnt of sailing was tried. It was hauled flat on the wind, thrown about half a dozen times, given a good broad reach and finally sent home before the wind with boom off to port, and at no time did it act lstless or show any lack of speed It was a bullder’s trial and confined en- tirely to slx or seven miles of deep water below Bristol harbor, no attempt belng made to show the yacht off to the Newport lony, but merely to give the designer a chance to see that it was all that he meant it to be, and in every respect It equalled his expectations. The yacht has not been turned over to the owners, as there is still some light work to be done on some of the rigging and in- side. It ls probable that it will formally be placed in commission at Newport late In the week. A critical analysis of the boat is that it is well balanced and well rigged, but its sails need improvement. As to speed, It is too early to draw any con- clusion. Shamrock If In & Mystery. RYDE, Isle of Wight, May 21.—~The trial of Shamrock II and Shamrock I today was in many respects the most puszling that has yet taken place. Instead of throwing additional light on the abilities of the challenger, today's race makes It more difMcult than ever to estimate its speed. On the stretch from Cowes to Silkiker they had an Interesting struggle under full cing canvass, with the skippers at the helm. OMcially racing has not commencel, but the skippers were apparently having & trial between themselves and snatching every advantage. Shamrock Il was a good half mile to the leeward when they started, but, in the five miles batween the anchorage and the Stikiker it closed up the whole of (his big gap. After threaten- Ing to go through the weather Sham- rock 11 had to be thrown in the wind and held all back, while Captain Wringe sailed Shamrock 1 boldly across his bows in the wrong tack. The keenness of the con test was shown by the fact (hat Captaln Wringo tried this bluff. for had Captain Sycamoro held on there would probably bave been a disastrous collision. Losxes on Every Tack. For the first five miles of the official course the new yacht did equally well, opening out on every board and then sud- denly falllng oif, instead uf galning. The new yacht lost on every tack. The explana- tion given by those on board is that the bobstay weakened and spilled the headsails and foresails, but it is strange it an im- perceptible difference in the trim of lits sails made €0 much difference in Its sailing. However, the old boat turned the weather mark nearly three minutes and went off down the wind at a great pace. Then came another surprise, for the challenger, which had never before been atle to run It, closed up all the time, and when they finished at Nab lightship the times were: Shamrock 1, two hours, six minutes and twelve reconds; Shamrock II, two hours, eleven minutes and nineteen seconds. The opinion of most of the experts who witnessed the race was that had it been desired that Shamrock II should win It could easily have done so.
