The formal opening of the season at Lake Manawa has been|awaited with unusual terest this year, and as it is already beyond the time when the season usually begins public interest has been sharpened by the delay. Minnetonka, Spirit Lake and other great northern summer resc have not begun their season Simultaneous with the inauguration of festivities at the latter places, the season will 0,en at Manawa. The date determinel upon is Thursday night June 20, five days later than the time usually set for opening. While Manawa is not as large as the great lakes alluded to, it is the largest body of water in the Missouri valley, and the only pleasure resort for the tirei man and woman of Omaha and Council Bluff: who can only get out of house or office for a few hours at a time, GRAND PLAZA ATTRAC Many thousand dollars hg making permanent improvements, Colonel Reed now has in his Grand Plaza the northern lake front as fine attractic can be found at any inland watering p on the continent. The improvements he has made this year are of the substantial character. To the grand pavillion he ha adled promenade porches, one sixty-five feet on west end, and another on east ninety-five feet long, and each four feet in the center, on the norih side, but 1 with the pavillion, he has erccted a bar 1, octagon in shace, 16 by 20 feet On the east bowling alleys, shooing gal leries and a double-decked promenade adls eighty feet more to the total length of the builling, making, with the bath Louses on tie west, a total iergth of 560 feet of covered promenale facing the lake, The bathing beach in front of the pevillion has been ex tended as far east as the old steamboat landing, and now affords over 1,000 feet of the finest water front, with clean, firm, sandy beach, reaching out into any lepth of water desived, and equipped with toboggan slides and all the new paraphernalia of popular bathing resorts. The grounds inside the grani plaza inclosure have been greatly im poved. The trees have made a prodigous growth this season, and hundreds of shady nooks have been provilel for picnic parties In the pavillion and around the grounds over 1,000 chairs and settees have been placed rhe grounds are illuminated at night with thirty-seven electric lights, which were turned on last night for the first time this season. Three locomotive headlights brighten corners where the foliage shuts out the rays the arc lights. Colonel Reed has not de cided on his music for the season; only that he will have a full concert band anl an or chesira for dancing parties. He is figuring with a Kansas City band whose members arc anxious to come to the lake and remain for the summer. Hund:eds of little thoughtful contriva have been arranged for the comfort convenience of the guests. A fine reataurant, where a luncheon or a fine meal can be served at any hour, will be opened in the west rotunda, with the Kitchen in the basement 1 un'er the charge of Bernard, the well known French uptown The program for Thursday, the open ing day, has not been definitely arranged but Colonel Reed promises to make it th event of the season.
